Super chipmunk as next plane
 

Would a super chipmunk make a good 4th plane. I have flown 2 trainers, and a spad. If I tone down the thows mechanicaly, Should I be ok?

It depends on your flying ability, everyone is different. If the spad was a taildragger that will help a lot.

For MOST people, it WOULD PROBABLY be ok, especially with reduced throws AND you do not over power it.

Actualy my spad had no gear at all. It's a lot of fun though. Both my trainers were tail draggers, so i will take the plunge this weekend then.

The Super Chipmunk can be a 1st plane even if your tutor is nuts, it was my friend's 1st plane and his tutor was a nut case. My friend learnt to fly on that one! But seriously, its a great low wing plane. The WM one is superb. If you can handle a low trainer well then you can fly it. The issue is not about lowering the control rates, its about landing her and not stalling her. You need to come in with some power so that she does not stall, not that this plane stals easily. I would say the best Chippie is the WM one, flies really well for its price.

I don't know what size "Super Chipmunk" you had in mind but WM has a very nice new 90 size ARF of The "Super Chipmunk" that comes in two choices. Fixed landing gear or pre-installed retracts. Your choice for $200. Very nicely done ARFs too. They're going to pre-printed covering on most of their newer ARFs. They still include a nice set of decals as well but the actual covering is pre-printed, as in one piece, instead of different colors layed over each other for striping & color changes so that means no more stripes pealing of your covering job. Might be worth a look.

P.S. They come with functional flaps too. designed for a .61 size 2 cycle glow, or .91 size four stroke.

I think you will do just fine on this plane. It can fly very tame, but will turn lose when you are ready to. I'm still flying this plane and having a blast doing it every time I take it to the field.

First of all, Hello elenasgrumpy, Have not seen you around here for some time. Hope your doing better.

Anyway Dave you never mentioned which Chipmunk you were looking at. I have seen good ones and not so good ones. There is a no name el' cheepo out there in the 40 size selling for anywhere between $69 and $89 that has a fiberglass fuse that my buddy got and it was absolute junk. Knowing what we know now we could have modified it and made it work but it was still over weight for a .46 then he tried to put a Tower .75 in it and it nearly fluttered it's self to death. Warning... you get what you pay for.

I wanted to name some names but thought its wise not to! Stick with the WM Chippie if you can, most of the other 40 sized ARF Chippies are sad. Fibreglass fuse that will split, wing dowels that have not been installed etc etc etc ... not worth the heartache ...

great review ken.....i had (and notice "had") a super chipmunk 52 ARF that i won on an auction on ..you guessed it...e-bay. i believe it was a CMP brand ARF. the instructions were pretty bad and i had to do alot of searching on the web to find info that i needed to assemble this project. it was one of those 89 dollar planes that looks so nice in the pictures that you've just got to have one. well, i did get to fly it a couple of times and it didnt fly too badly for the most part. however, the stall characteristics of this plane gave me trouble on my landing approaches...and because i'm a beginner...i wasnt able to recover so i've lost this plane. i will have another one someday because they are so beautiful in the air as well as on the ground. best of luck dave. you will like this plane. it's a beauty. here's the one i had.

If you have some one with more experience test fly the Chipmunk and set up the control throws to be very docile, then yes, I think it could be your 4th airplane. But get help with it. And have a more experienced flyer stay with you for a few flights until you feel confident.
I have the CG Chipmunk. ITs a very forgiving and honest airplane. It stalls gently and has no tendency to snap. Its landing speed is slow and it handles fairly well in winds up to 15 mph.

what these guys are saying is true, the Chipper is a good flying model& prettty docile for a low wing. as a tail wheel type , it has a tendency to tip over on nose easily due toa light tail. sweeping the gear forward a bit helps. with modest controls & perhaps some help you should be able to transition just fine.

I took my Chipmunk to the flying field yesterday and just taxied it around. It is a 57.5 in wingspan. My batter is mounted about 3/4 way back in the fuse for correct CG. It was a Nitro Model and I will never buy another from them. It was a terrible experience and had not my neighbor been around to give me so insight I would have discarded it. The Plans were the worst I have seen. And have talked to others that said they had Nitro Planes of various sorts and they agreed they would not buy another.
The plane is beautiful though i think it is just a very cool plane with the decals and all on. Mine has the dark canopy which to me is awsume looking. I am fairly new to flying and everyone has told me not to fly it yet I am not ready. Started with the Super Cub, then put a typhoon motor on it. Have been flying an Mini Edge and doing well with it. Fly a top wing glow trainer with a 63" wing span and it flys well. Last few days have been flying a Tribute foam plane had a 480 on it but was to much. Put a 400 with a 8X4.7 and it flew better but still has elevator wash. It is a very flimsy plane and would not recommend it to anyone. Think for learning a Typhoon would be ideal for maybe a fourth plane then step up to the Chip. That is what I am trying to do get good with the cheaper model before putting mine in the air. But i look cool at the field lol.
