The good, the bad, the ugly
 

The good, first to rc, I love building. The bad, covering. The ugly, trying to make my coverting look good. I know it will take practice, and my covering skills needs a lot of work. It's frustrating after taking so much time and effort in building your kit, and find out the covering process is so time consuming, and patience is a must. You are so close but yet so far.

You can do it Cal :) just take your time and it will turn out great.

Draw up some rough sketches of your plane and use markers and color in the spaces, keep doing this till your satisfied, thats what i do alot of the time, its very helpful. Also, on rcuniverse they have some really great videos of the procedure/process of covering. like for corners/edges and such areas you want to put down a small strip like 1/2" or so that will cover the edge. then once you have those all done you do the main areas, like the fuselage sides, top + bottom of elevator, etc...

Keep the first one simple. Just get it done and build confidence. No flag patterns on the first try.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND two books by Faye Steillly( THE Master) availible through Model Airplane News & other sources. excellent primer on film covering tips & do's & donts. Harry Higley books also has a book availible.patience is a key but knowlege applied beats 'em all.

Thanks for the pep talk everyone. I have tried to keep it simple. Basically solid base color with wide stripes on top of the wings, stab, and on the fin/rudder. I've considered myself a prettly laid back person. But this covering is an intensive process. Tools isn't the issue, but whew............. How about everyone else, do you look forward to the cover process? Seeing a lot of kits being built on this forum, and seeing the pictures of their covering (which all of them looked perfect), it looks like all have had PLENTY of experiance and paitence built up.

The biggest thing to remember about covering is that it is a long, slow (and at times) intense process.

Don't think: "I'm going to cover my wing tonight".

Think: "I'm going to do some covering on my wing tonight"

If you've got a good eye, you'll notice in my videos that (although you only see my wrists and forearms) my shirt changes a few times. I don't recall exactly now, but I'm guessing that it took at least 3-4 days to do that covering job.

Now I could have done it in one sitting, and it could have been done in a single Saturday, but I have a life that needs my attention now and then too. :)

I have always loved building, but I never liked covering. After it is done, though, it can look gorgeous. Now I only build SPAD. With that there is no covering. A few stick-on decals and it is of to the field for flying. The Canard to the left is a SPAD.

Covering isn't my favorite thing to do but the planes just fly so much better if it gets done.:D
