NEED HELP!!!!!

1 Attachment(s)
Hi all,
I'm new to the rc plane world and just got a half assembled Goldberg Anniversary Edition Piper Cub! No instuctions[&o] but, I was able to download them from goldbergs site!
The few questions I have are,The instuctions say cover with fabric! Whats the difference between fabric and monokote! Can I use monokote on the whole plane?

RE: NEED HELP!!!!!

Congratulations on yor first plane/building job. It looks good.

Since this isn't a scale project, you can use Monokote. It will give you a slick, shiny finish. You can also use Ultracote with the same results.

If you want a more scale-type finish, use Solartex, Colortex, or Worldtex. These are fuel-proof, iron-on fabric finish coverings. They are just as easy, or easier, to use as Monokote or Ultracote. Good luck!

Be sure to get with an instructor for your first flights and instruction.

RE: NEED HELP!!!!!

You definitely can use Monokote or other film covering. Fabric is actual cloth. Full scale Cubs were fabric covered. There are iron-on fabrics available, some prepainted and some you have to paint. There's also Sig Koverall. It is plain polyester fabric. You use adhesive or dope to stick the edges down, then shrink with an iron or heat gun.

RE: NEED HELP!!!!!

You will do best with one of the iron on coverings.

I'm not planning on flying this one right away!
I got this plane with a O.S. Supertigre GS.40, an eagleII with an ENYA super sport .40 and a sturdy birdy with a O.S .25 with field box, and old futaba attack-4 radio system for $100 bucks! I thought that was cheap enough to get into the hobby!
So I'm going to try the sturdy birdy or the eagle for my first flight!

RE: NEED HELP!!!!!

Go with the Eagle II as your trainer. One of the best trainer designs ever.

RE: NEED HELP!!!!!

BTW, Do I need any kind of jig to put the wing sections together?

RE: NEED HELP!!!!!

No, just a nice flat building surface. Office ceiling tiles make a nice building board that will accept straight pins. Home Depot and Lowe's has these...

Good idea! I've got them in my kitchen ceiling! [8D]

Don't ruin your ceiling.

Doesn't matter what plane you start with, use an instructor or you will need the second plane on the second day. And a big trash bag the first day.[:@]

I agree! The eagle is already assembled with radio installed! It don't look like much but, like bruce88123 said if I don't find an instructor it won't matter much anyway!
Here's a few pics of the eagle!
BTW, I was kidding about the ceiling......

Hmmm, table looks more airworthy than the plane.:D Should do the job fine if mechanically sound. where's the windshield? Don't really need one but it used to have a clear plastic one.

Thats what I'm saying! I've never built an RC Plane but,I think I could do a better job!
I got a box full of stuff for the planes,Windshields, landing gear, props, ect, ect,. I'm goining to go through the parts this weekend and clean up the eagle and see whats what!
The radio system works & I'm going to give the engine some fresh fuel and glow plug and see if it fires!

RE: NEED HELP!!!!!

I'm just going to guess the eagle just doesn't have its windshield installed yet, or side windows for that matter.

The Goldberg cub is a great plane. I had one covered in fabric, it weighed a little more than film but the cub can handle lots of extra weight. Have fun with it.

Not installed yet? It's a used plane, already flown and probably repaired.

BTW - Is that a Christmas decoration plugged into the outlet?

I believe the guy I got them from flew them the way we see them! Like I said "I got a box full of crash parts" Even a few wings that look like they had a hard landing! I figure The wood scraps were worth bringing home! Learn to fly on the eagle(if it's air worthy) and build the cub!

Oh, well maybe not installed yet pending an order to goldberg then. :(

RE: NEED HELP!!!!!

Don't worry about a plastic windshield unless you really want it. Just build up a balsa one or at least cover the opening with some balsa to keep exhaust out.

RE: NEED HELP!!!!!

Thanks for the help guys! I'll let you know how it turns out this weekend!

I found out there is a rc plane club just on the other side of town!

hmm I can't believe nobody has recommended adding some trim colors to that plane to help with orientation and visibilty.

the belly and under the wings are orange
That will help a little, but throw (Or paint) some 6" wide bands on the outboard side of the wings - Or paint about 8 - 10" of the wingtips red, Blue, or some other dark color (Not yellow, or light blue etc)

A big white plane will be very hard to see when it's up in the sky!

I also recommend using Ultracote to cover it with. It's the most user-friendly of all the coverings

RE: NEED HELP!!!!!

There may be more local help available than you were aware of. I typed zip code 21740 in the AMA Club search:
http://www.modelaircraft.org/clubsearch.aspx
There are three clubs within 25 miles of that zip code.
