Re-attatching a Canopy?
 

What's the best way to attatch a Hanger 9 PTS Mustang Canopy? Screws, AP Glue or Glue Sticks? I'm replacing my Fuse and I pulled the Canopy off the Old Fuse, and I'm not sure what Hanger 9 used to attatch it to begin with. It's like a Rubbery Substance. [&:] Doesn't taste like Paste? [sm=lol.gif] Plus this is my chance to put the pilot in to take up some of that room!

I use canopy glue, you can get it at LHS. I also know some people just use small screws.

Since something always comes loose in my canopies screws are preferred.

Thank You so much Jim. I'm going to get a bottle, I'll see if Horizon Hobby or other E- Stores have it. I work all these hours in the office and I hardly have time to get to my LHS. ;)

Go to Menard's or Lowe's and pick up a tube of GOOP. Use it for your pilot also. Your canopy will be on for good.

I use lepage 5 plastic adhesive for canopies and any other non structural jobs. Available at home depot here. Dries clear, flexible.

GOOP is an adhesive, and yes, it dries clear. I just bought a new tube of it. Great stuff. At least go the one of the stores and read the instructions on the tube. You can get it for 4 to $5.

Clear Silicone. It's like a Rubbery Substance. Doesn't taste like Paste?

Silicone attracts dust unfortunatly. Never looks clean.

Been using silicone for years. just a little on the backside of canopy does the trick, never had a problem with dust. easy to remove if needed.

Canopy glue is almost foolproof. It's so easy to get an excellent job that it beats everything all hollow.

Mark out where the glue is to go on the fuselage. Wipe the canopy glue along that "line". Q-tips work great. They smooth out the glue so you wind up with the perfect amount. You'll have sufficient glue and it won't dribble off. You don't have to be perfect, but stay close to the lines. Now, use a Q-tip and wipe canopy glue around the inside perimeter of the canopy where it will touch the fuselage. You don't have to be too neat, but try not to be sloppy. You don't have to beat your brains out keeping everything perfectly clean however, because the canopy glue is very forgiving. More on that later.

After you've got the canopy prepared, the glue on the fuselage will have gotten nicely tacky. It will help you hold the canopy where you want it. Have a couple of long strips of masking tape ready and put the canopy under slight tension with the tape.

Pressing and taping the canopy in place is going to squeeze some glue out. No problem. Matter of fact, it's actually a good thing. It insures you've got a good seal. Take a wet paper towel and wipe away any squeeze-out. The glue is very forgiving. It cleans up easy. It also allows you to settle the canopy with no bulges. Screwing on a canopy often leaves gaps and bulges. Not going to happen with canopy glue. Epoxy can be awful to work with and any smear is usually a catastrophy, or at best a tough job to clean up.

If you see any excess canopy glue inside the canopy, don't sweat it. It will dry clear and become invisible in a day or so.

It's amazing stuff.
I used to hate gluing on canopies.
I got one to do tonight for the P47. It'll take about 10 or 15 minutes and will be perfect. I actually look forward to it.

da Rock, you've been very helpful! Thankyou... I'll be putting the canopy on in a few days. I'm going to buy the Canopy Glue in a few days. I'd rather spend the extra money on the stuff that's made for the job that I need to do. I'm working long hours, so I'll get to the LHS in a few days on my day off. I read these Posts while I'm at work when I get a few minutes to look. [sm=omg_smile.gif]

I've used the same method you use for years now. I would glue the canopy on and then use tape to hold it in place. Until I saw something here on RCU awhile back (I've looked and can't seem to find it) that made doing this even easier. And after I saw the tip it was definitely a "Doh!!!!!!" moment. It made perfect sense after I saw it. Instead of taping the canopy in place use a Ace bandage (yeah, they type you use when you sprain your ankle!!) to wrap around the fuselage. This provides even pressure to the entire canopy as the glue dries. And when you remove the wrap it won't stick to the canopy and risk pulling it loose from the glue. I've used this a couple of times now and it's a great tip.

:D Well Ken, I took your suggestion, It came out perfect! I used "Dap" because two of the LHS didn't have the Canopy Glue. I paid $4.00 at the Hardware Store, Not bad! Well people, I learned that 64" Rubber bands work great for putting pressure on the Canopy while the seal dries... I couldn't find a Ace Bandage around the house.

Looks good. BTW- Those are #64 bands, not 64". It's a size number and not an actual length.
