Best Second Plane

I'm ready to try a low wing, wich would be better to start with, the Tiger11 or 4*40?
Thanks Bob

I've had a Tiger 2, good plane. The 4* has a good reputation too. Can't lose either way.

Tiger 2 is very durable (trust me) gentle flyer with great aerobatic capability, As I have heard the same goes for the 4*

Which ever one you chose, you`ll pick a winner.

Flip a coin, both the Tiger 2 and the Four Star 40 are wonderful planes. I doubt even employees from Sig and Goldberg would have anything bad to say about the other's airplane.

I wanted a tail dragger so I went for the 4*40. I love it!
I bought the kit and it was not a difficult build as long as you study the plans and the book carefully. If you are interested in building the kit I have a build thread here on RCU - just search for it.
She flies great (as long as she has fuel in the tank - don't ask)...

I've had both and both are great second planes. You may also consider another one, a Tiger 60 ARF. That was my second plane, and I still have it and still fly it. It gives you great visibility (size) and flys like a trainer but with more capabilities.

My original setup for the Tiger 60 was an OS 61 SF that I bought second hand from someone. That engine, by the way, is still in use by Overbored in his remake of the Tiger 60 (he built a kit version and made some very interesting changes). I gave it to him to use and he loves the engine.

My Tiger 60 now has a Super Tigre 75 with a MACS tuned pipe. Very VERY capable plane. Still doscile when I need it to be, yet very aerobatic when I want it to be. No, not 3D, by the way. Someone says '3D is for movies'.

No matter what you choose, Tiger II, 4* 40, or Tiger 60 (even 4*60 by the way.. great choice) you can't go wrong.

I added to my Tiger 'fleet' by the way, by getting the new Tiger 120. It's a tail dragger configuration, OS 1.20 AX. One problem is that it needed quite a bit of added nose weight to meet the CG, but it flys typical of the Tigers. Just great!!! Much slower (becaue it is much larger) than the Tiger 60, but imagine a Tiger 60 in slow motion.. :).

DS.

Jeez, Bruce.. don't like 3D, don't like electrics... but use fuel. jeech.. what's next? Real batteries?? :D;)

Me either.

Even though you didn't ask:
On my last flight of the day (of course...) I was running out of runway so I wanted to go around for another attempt to land. But alas, she ran dry as I was turning downwind. The farmer planted corn this year so I had a rough landing. Nothing serious and all is repaired now and will fly her this weekend.

Real batteries? Yep, as long as they have a crank so I can wind them up.

Thanks for all the info. Do you know where the CG is and what the control throws should be? I lost my instruction manual when I moved.
Bob

RE: Best Second Plane

For my 4*40 I measured CG on the main spar (I think 3 inches from LE). I don't remember the throws but I'll check the manual tonight and reply, unless someone else beats me to it.
If you don't find a manual I can scan mine and send it.

Thanks RW. I just moved to In. where is Mooresville ?

rwright142 06-15-2007 10:21 AM

RE: Best Second Plane

Mooresville is a little southwest of Indy - the home of fast women and good looking racecars ;).

Welcome to Indiana.

BTW, the AMA headquarters is in Muncie - about 80 miles south of Ft. Wayne. You should plan to stop by sometime and check it out.

This would be the weekend for the visit. The eXtreme Flight Championships are going on this weekend in Muncie. Wish I could have gone.

Thanks RW, All I need is C G location and the control throws. I built the 4* 40 before I moved but didn't get a chance to set it up.

CG: The manual says to make sure it balances "somewhere on the main spar".
Elevator 1/2" up and down
Rudder 1" left and right
Aileron 5/8" up 1/2" down
(measured at the widest point of each control surface)

RE: Best Second Plane

I haven't even soloed yet, and I just ordered my 2nd plane (Explorer L ARF). I had just about completed my own plans for a low wing trainer, but found texasrcplanes.com that sells a tiger II imitation for $65 (overstock sale). I can't scratch build one for that price. The company owner emailed me to tell about their planes...that they are quality even though some are prices really low for this sale. He said the Lufkin area modelers have flown this plane and that it performs very well.
