Thanx for naming this part!!!
This part is used for balancing a tail heavy plane.
It comes in different sizes. It replaces the prop nut. It looks like a spinner. I can't remember what it's called and am looking to order one. Anyone know what they're called? Thanx! |
RE: What is that part called?
Is this what you are looking for?
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXK241&P=ML If so, search on Tower Hobbies for "Spinner Nuts". There are a bunch from many manufacturers, and like you said they come in many sizes. Btw, if I'm not mistaken, the brass ones are heavier than the standard ones and therefore more favorable if you are looking to add nose weight to balance a tail heavy plane. However, I'm not 100% sure about this, so someone may need to confirm it. Hope this helps! [sm=shades_smile.gif] |
RE: What is that part called?
What you are looking for is referred to as a "Nose Weight".

This one is the weighted brass spinner nut. This one is 1/4 20 threaded, but they have 5/16 plus many others. The brass ones are used to add 'useful' nose weight. DS. |

Thanks geek!
I came across that part when I searched for 'weight'. |
RE: Thanx for naming this part!!!
Make sure you use the nose weight in addition to the stock engine prop nut. Replacing the nut with the nose weight is not adviseable as they have a tendency to loosen easier.

And if you loose one in flight, you will have a hard to control tail heavy plane. Personally, i like my weight attached to the plane and not spinning in front of the engine.
The extra weight on the engine also acts like a fly wheel, it can help smooth out the engine vibrations, but it eat a little power and also causes the engine to be slower to respond to throttle changes. some of those characteristics can be good, and some can be bad. You have to decide if they are good or bad for your circumstances. |
