Next plane
hi guys
for my 2nd plane i was thinking of getting a [link=http://www.sussex-model-centre.co.uk/shopexd.asp?id=21604]SIG FOUR STAR 40[/link] built from a kit with [link=http://www.sussex-model-centre.co.uk/shopexd.asp?id=1167]SAITO 72 FOUR STROKE[/link] bolted to the firewall, a [link=http://www.sussex-model-centre.co.uk/shopexd.asp?id=20546]HITEC HFS-06MT RECIEVER[/link] with [link=http://www.sussex-model-centre.co.uk/shopexd.asp?id=1910]HITEC HS311 SERVOS[/link] and the extra bits and bobs such as Pinned hinges, Sullivan Gold'n'Rods and Turqoise/Yellow Profilm covering what do you think of the combination and can you suggest anything better? - Foamy XxX |

it seems like you know what you are doing.......i like everything but the reciever. The reciever is more for park flyers and is only 6 channels. Its better to get a 7+ channel now because later on your going to want those extra servo ports.......

i fly a HFS-06MT on my Current trainer and it says in the book that its full range, besides, the Four star is four channel and i dont plan to re-use the innards in a bigger plane as i like to keep all my planes fly-able.
anyone have any comments about the Saito? it will be my first four stroke but at that price its looking nicer than an OS but im not sure how reliable/long lasting the saitos are |

ok, Update:
my instructor says that a .60 would maybe handle the winds better and be easier to see when i get into aerobatics so im now going with the Four Star .60 and a Saito 82a Golden Knight sound alrite? |

I am the proud owner of a Saito engine, the older style with the choke. It idles at around 1900 - 2100 RPM and just keeps running. It was a little finicky during break-in, so I would recommend running around four tanks through it on the ground. Saito engines are TOP QUALITY.
The four star 60 flies better than the 40 for the reasons your instructor suggested but the 40 size is great too. |

I built the Sig 4 Star 60 and I love it. I'm using an OS 70 Surpass in it and it flies great!!! If you go with the 60 size, the Sato 82 would be fine. I put a .56 Gold Knight in my GP Cub and I love the engine.
The 4*60 is easy to see in the sky if you come up with a good covering scheme. Building the plane is a lot of fun. The plans were easy to follow with a lot of photos in the plans. I can't think of any real difficulties. I don't know anything about your choice in raidos since I'm a JR guy. Here are some photos of my 4*. Let me know if I can help. |

the covering is the only bit that concerns me, what if i screw it up big time? arent the wings one big bit? what about wrinkles, bubbles and warps? after seeing those pics i HAVE to get one :D |

If I`m going to buy an engine from China , it`s going to be a Magnum at 1/2 the price as OS. I have a Magnum 4 c .52 on my LT-40 Great running engine and it just like my Saitos, fuel and fly. |

Give the saito awile to get broken in. Also keep the throttle setting low for the first break-in tank or two or you'll be chasing your prop.(or getting chased, if your in the wrong place at wrong time!) Have seen saitos throw prop spinner locknut and all when run too fast too soon. will also be a little picky about needle settings. Be patient and you will be rewarded with one heck of a stump puller.

wild I agree with most of what you want to do except the part about the receiver. alway get the most you can.
I understand about keeping planes flyable but you just don't know what's down the road, perhaps you'll see a model you want, or you need to replace the 4 star, the replacement requires a receiver with extra room, might keep you from having to buy another receiver later. |

Don't worry about screwing up the covering, you can always rip it off and start over if its not right. Start with the transparent first, cover the wing as you would any other aircraft. You want to precut the top covering before you put it on the plane. I used a piepan to get the curves, and put them on in pieces. Just take your time and you'll have no problems. You may get a few bubbles, just take your time and work them out. Again, if you start with the transparent and cover the entire wing (top and bottom at once) and shrink it in stages (starting from the wingtips and slowly working your way in switching from side to side) you'll have no problems with warping. Here are pics of the top and bottom. By the way this REALLY stickes out in the air! |
