.46 AX Leaky muffler
 

What can I do to stop leaks on an OS .46 AX muffler? The muffler leaks from the rear at the exit hole of the bolt which holds the muffler together and also in the middle of the muffler where the whole muffler assemble comes apart so you can change the deflection of the exhaust. im looking for something to use to seal these leaks that will hold up to the high temps.

On that same engine I used silicone that car shops use to seal crankcases.

use the silicone but get the high temp kind,the stuff i use is the red type.you might need to replace the lock nut that holds the through bolt in the muffler.once they are loosened they seem vibrate loose,i have had some luck with the blue locktight brand thread locker,but mostly just either replace the locknut or double nut it.

You can also use JB Weld. Its like a metelized epoxy so it stands up to the heat with no problems. Only thing its basically permanent so make sure that the exhaust is pointing in the direction that you want it. :D

Keep in mind that the bolt threads into the rear part of that muffler and also has the nut on it. So you tighten the parts with the bolt first. Get it tight, then hold that position with the screwdriver and tighten the nut up.

BTW, I was talking to a guy at a flyin last year who said that he stuck the bolt into the freezer to try and keep those things from loosening up in the air. They seem to have that tendency if you've loosened them for any reason. He actually had it backwards. He should have heated the bolt and and maybe frozen the muffler body, then tightened it all while the bolt was hot and the body was cold. You want it to shrink to tighten. The things we do................ ;) Seems he'd lost a number of the parts in the air. (Locktite on the nut is a good idea.)

If you have access to a drill press, you can drill a very small hole in the bolt behind the nut. Put a piece of safety wire thru the hole and twist it, will keep the nut from backing off. Won't keep it from getting loose, but at least you won't have to search around for the back half of your muffler....

high temp silicon as said above at the split line.... a dab inside the aft section of muffler will seal that. for metal parts gel super glue 1 dab works as the best thread locker and is not permanet.
nah freeze the bolt and heat the nut, nut gets bigger bolt gets smaller and you can get it on furhther or tighter.

I was having the same leaking issues with the muffler on my Magnum XLS .52A. I found when I removed the lock nut from the back of the bolt and tightened the bolt down from the front, then put the lock nut back on the back end of the muffler, the whole assembly sealed up tight as a drum again.
