Average training time until solo flight
I just checked my records and found it took 36 flights on mine. I guess I am one of the old guys. However, there were some things that caused delays during my learning. Spent almost two months sending in my radio, receiving it back, and returning it for the same problem. My instructor and I made many modifications to the plane (ARF) until we got the engine with the thrust directions set right. Found 4* down thrust, boy did that plane want to stay on the ground on take off. Still I think without all of the delays I could have done it sooner than 36.

I never practiced on a sim and it only took me 3-20 minute flights to be able to takeoff and land every time without even breaking a prop. My instructor tells me that he's trained some 400 people over the years and beginners learning as fast as I did is the norm as far as he is concerned. BTW, he doesn't use a buddy-box at all.

Hovered
I bought a top cap before my training was over. Went out on a cool am and soloed by myself. No one was there. THen grabbed may top cap and hovered 30ft second day after solo. I LOVE SIMS. It makes so much possible. I really feel that if somebody flew a sime for 30 total hrs. they could solo their first day. Keep up on the sims. Dan

I would have to say that 10 to 12 flights sounds about right. I back up my 2 cents worth whole heartedly because I soloed about 10 flights after beginning, flew a biplane at 11 weeks, I also flew a fully symmetrical Extra 330 at 11 weeks and will be competing in the Youth Masters at Joe Nall in June.

Lots of trouble
The club Pres was not to happy when they found out. Dont take pics of hovering when your not to be flying solo. HAHAH
Now I am nominated to be an instructor. I soloed in feb. I thinks I have read almost every thread here. My brain is to full of info. My advice... Train with a Magic. They fly better than a trainer and you wont Outgrow it. Dan |

I never kept logs for model flight, and it was so long ago I wouldn't trust my memory to give an accurate history.
But I know I destroyed several planes over the years. Most of them after I "soloed." And there was no such thing as a "Buddy Box" when I learned. But the "Magic" is a great plane. Got one a few weeks ago, and while I am supposed to be a "Twin nut," I haven't flown any other plane since I got it. Get one, stuff a Magnum or OS 46 on the front, you'll be pleased. Bill. |
