O.S. Gurgle
Im running an OS 46 AX using 15% Nitro/18%oil. Between 1/2 throttle to 3/4 throttle....engine seems to gurgle ....it doesnt have a consistent 2 stroke "buzz" as in every other range. Has anyone else experienced something similar - solution?

RE: O.S. Gurgle
G'day Mate,
Sounds like midrange is rich, try pinch test, & set idle mixture, then run up to full power & rise nose of plane, if set properly engine should speed up slightly, if it speeds up a lot, lean out slightly until it speeds up slightly & fly, then try throttle response in midrange, it should be better, also what prop, 11x6 is a good starting point. |
RE: O.S. Gurgle
Using a 10x6 prop.

RE: O.S. Gurgle
G'day Mate,
A 10x6 is too small, for the 46AX, 11x6 or 7, is a better prop, & will help with tuning as well. |
RE: O.S. Gurgle
ORIGINAL: ro347 Using a 10x6 prop. Like alan said, try changing the prop. Also, how many tanks of fuel have you ran thru the engine? So far, after about 30 flights, my AX is running real good, but my FXi needed a lot of adjusting after it was broken in. Had to adjust the idle screw in order to make the correct needle valve adjustments. I'm running 10% nitro, 18%oil. Peter |
RE: O.S. Gurgle
Engine has about 2 gallons through it. Ill try something bigger and see how that works out.

RE: O.S. Gurgle
I agree, your engine sounds a little rich and is running in the 4 cycle mode when less than full throttle. When I set my high speed needle valve, I will lean it to maximum and then back off an 1/8 of a turn or a little more, after the engine is broken in of course.

RE: O.S. Gurgle
Ritchen it! After leaning the engine, turn the needle in the opposite direction, i.e. ritcher about 1/8 of a turn or a little more.

I've been having the same problem with my 46AX running an APC 11x6 on 15%. Almost a gallon has gone through it. Adjusting the idle mixture needle has helped but how is the pinch test done again?

RE: O.S. Gurgle
I know it's a different engine but my OS46LA gurgles, rattles or burbles when I let off of the throttle. Kinda sounds like a Harley with a Jake brake. It runs good, idles like a champ and has given me nothing but good flying. It's well broken in and I don't think it's excessively rich. I know, I'm opening myself up for the nay-sayers of the LA's carb, how it's absolutely no good and i'll never get a good tune out of it, etc. But, that 46 LA spins a 10X7 APC 3-blade just fine, looks cool in my thunder Tiger Lazy Tiger and flies it like a combat plane if I want it to. Well, maybe not JUST like a combat plane but it'll move along if I wanted to. Actually, I went with the 46 because I like to overpower and run with less throttle, I went with the LA because it was as light as my 25 Magnum and much more powerful. I'm not sure if it's the same noise that you're noticing but mine does have some noise to it between 1/2 and 3/4 but only when I let off the throttle.

RE: O.S. Gurgle
10/6 is an appropriate prop for the engine. Sounds like the engine is out of tune

RE: O.S. Gurgle
You guys want to know exactly where your engine stands. let it idle and remove the fuel line from the carb or pinch it off and wait for the engine to quit running. Listen to the rpms as it quits. if the rpms increase as the engine quits, your low end is to rich. If the rpms just go down and quit, low end too lean. Set it for a very slight increase.
