RE: New pilot
I love it when I see young people involved. I am a therapist for alcohol and drug addiction. See too many young people involved in that. Thanks for the pics.

RE: New pilot
Get her a book about Amelia Aerhardt.

RE: New pilot
Good idea Rock.
You're a lucky man Ben. And she looks like a sweetie too! (Must get her looks from Mom :D ) |
RE: New pilot
my then 9 yr old daughter solo'd at 9..now she's 12 and I'd better not go to the field without her

RE: New pilot
Kids are great students. We have a 7 year old, Josh, at our field. He is a real character and very serious about his flying. He is always out there with his grand-pa. His mom comes and watches on occasion.
He sort of scared me a bit because he was flying inverted about 20 feet over the runway a few weeks ago.. ha.. kids have great reflexes.. much better than mine. |
RE: New pilot
I started this 11 years ago when my son was 12. lasted a couple years until he started "liking" girls and cars but he okay. The nice thing about her being a "girl" is like a great hidden talent to have. When subjects come up with her firends or others in school regarding the subject. She'll tell them and they won't believe she really flys a 40% Biplane.

RE: New pilot
I live for playing with my daughters (4 kids and all girls) I got them interested in rocketry and when I started into airplanes I bought them each an electric along with a couple of trainers kits, radio equipment and glow engine, It didn't take and none of them showed any interest. Now it is nitro buggies and they love it, we can have a blast right in our own back yard.
Don't get me wrong, my favorite will always be airplanes but sharing a hobby with the kids is very special indeed. |
RE: New pilot
My little 7 year old daughter got on the buddy box last weekend. Boy was I proud. She is showing an interest. I don't want to force her but I glad that she wants to go out to the field with the old dad;)[:'(] I would love it if she got better than me.:D:D

RE: New pilot
man i know i'm only 18 almost 19 but i love it when i see parents and grandparents loving to spend time with their kids and grand kids like that. that sure does give me something to look forward to in about 10 years or so. i didn't get to spend alot of time with my dad. i know it hurts him as much as it does me. he works every day for about 15 hours to support the family. i work with him so i know the stress he goes through. also it gives us some time together. i'm sure gonna miss it when i go to college and wont get to see him every day.

RE: New pilot
Thats just great,
She seems to have a grin from ear to ear. My 12 year old son is practicing on the G-3 and tomorrow he is going on the buddy box with my former instructor and mentor. He will be learning on my Nexstar that I learned on. I can't wait to see his face when he has finished his first lesson. Tony the instructor is very patient and loves to teach youngsters to fly. Quinn is already an AMA and Club member so all he has to do is solo and he will be all set. Anyway congratulations on getting your daughter interested and for listening to my story, Thank you. Good luck, Gibbs |

Just had to chime in and brag on my boy. He is ten going on 11 and last Sunday he had 3 sucessful landings on the buddy box. His consistency isn't the best but when he consentrates he flies really well. The greatest thing is his granddad was there to witness. Maybe this year we will have 3 generations flying at the same time. Even if is next year it will be awsome.

RE: New pilot
great thing about starting them young is they can learn so quickly!
i had about 6 or 7 flights before i took my A certificate, solod the flight after and now im flying inverted circuits 15 feet off the ground. get her started on a buddy box and go from there, you may be surprised how quickly she progresses |
RE: New pilot
I know some of you know this but I'll say it anyway for those that NEED to learn. " ENJOY them while they are young, when they turn about 13, chances are you will be out of the picture ". ENJOY !!! RED

RE: New pilot
Wow great to hear all the good stories about kids and flying. I did U-control when I was a kid and allways wanted to do R/C planes. I know about pushing the kids into things. I'm playing this one real cool. She love to go down to the local hobby shop with me, they have a G3 set up on a large screen for her to fly.

rc gear 300.00 bucks plus
fuel 15.00 7 year old with radio and plane in the air...priceless |
RE: New pilot
I've tried in vain to get my newphews interested in RC planes & other things.
They seemed bored with it. Glad you have a youngster to teach RC! Dave |
RE: New pilot
This is inspiring! I have my first on the way - somegeek Jr is scheduled to be born on Sept 19th. I am hoping he got my geek gene and will dig on building as well as flying. I told my wife if we have a daughter next time, perhaps she'll like to fly as well. Nitro buggies would be cool too. Anything to keep them busy and their little minds churning and learning.
Great stories - thanks for sharing! somegeek |
RE: New pilot
I can see him in school now ----- Will Somegeek Jr please come up to the board and explain ............................ Think twice about that name :D

RE: New pilot
I'am 11, almost 12 - have had countless hours on the simulator (Real Flight G3.5), got myself a Hobbico Nexstar, belong to a great club, have a wonderful dad who is always their to help me or answer questions, got my AMA, membership to the local club (first and only girl), and I'm yet to be trained in the spring by a guy in the local club named Tony. I have heard nothing but, positive things from the people he has trained. Congratulations on getting your daughter intrested in the hobby !

To dirmagnet, you sound like a great son. Take the leasones your father teaches you and pass them on to your children. I'm sure he has great pride in you. Make sure you always make time for him. You will never regret it later. Phone calls are cheap. Dennis

TakingFlight96.
I am happy for you. I am sure your Dad is bursting with pride. My 16 year old daughter will be on the buddy box this spring. She had a ride with the Young Eagles in a Piper Cherokee. She was scared to go up but once the flight was over she wanted to go again. Airplanes are, for shure, not just a boy thing. Best of luck. |
