Goldberg Protege assembly

I hate to use the word build for something as simple as the Protege.
As I mentioned in a previous post, I bought one for a 'build' demonstration at a Symposium that I was part of yesterday. I started working on the thing by hitting it with the iron for all wrinkles and bubbles that appeard on the covering. Then I started with the aileron servo installations (two of them, one per wing). But, as luck would have it, I was pretty busy with other things, such as the two RC simulators that were going full-tilt all day long! The kids really enjoyed the sims (I had Realflight G3.5 and the Aeroflight Pro running on two separate PC's. So, with questions, distractions, and parents asking how much they are and where to get them.. well, I had my hands full. We had a line to get into our 'booth' by the kids to 'play' with the sims. The second picture shows me in the background working on the Protege. That's Art Shoenrock, one of our club members, standing next to my 'work bench'. So, bottom line.. I got both wings finished but that was all. I will finish it up this weekend perhaps (if the weather turns to crap) no doubt. DS. |

RE: Goldberg Protege assembly
Hi Ken.
That's not a grin, that's a smirk... :D :D :D She said smile, so I did.. well, almost [sm=bananahead.gif][sm=what_smile.gif][sm=lol.gif] And, yep, that's me. Dick. |

CGR, If Ken gets to ruff on you, you can use this one for revenge .LOL!
And just so I don`t get in trouble. Ken did not do the nose adjustment on the F-22 , he just braved the weeds to retrieve it. |

lol:D

Uh-oh..I'm in for it now.. [X(] :D Thanks, Moondogie. I've got it saved in my 'special pictures' folder.. ;)[sm=49_49.gif]

RE: Goldberg Protege assembly
I had a Midwest Aerobat a while back and loved it. From what I understand, they are somewhat similar. I am looking forward to flying the Protege.

RE: Goldberg Protege assembly
Hey CG. I just started my Protege this morning. My very first airplane. I've decided to take the plunge into RC. I understand this is an easy build, but thank god for DAD. I would have been lost. Hope to finish up tomorrow. Dad got me some kind of Tiger 61 to power it. Bench tested and broke in today. Can you tell I'm excited!!! It's also been some great quality time with dad too!!

RE: Goldberg Protege assembly
Is your Dad already an RC pilot? Does he have the experience to teach you properly? Meaning, do you have a buddy box setup for the training?
If you answer no to any of the above questions, you really are biting off more than you can chew here. This is not an ordinary trainer, it is a 'second' plane, one that a person would get after he solo'ed and flew a basic trainer a while. It will be faster and less forgiving than a basic trainer. If your Dad has a buddy box and is able to teach you using that, then you are all set to go. If not, then you and your dad ought to head to a club and talk to them and solicit the aid of a qualified instructor to help you out. Once the plane is built, you will have to have someone that is knowledgeable go over the plane to make sure it is safe and ready to fly. Again, if your Dad is capable of doing this, if he has flown RC before and is qualified to examine the plane, and qualified to train you properly, then go for it, and I offer my best wishes to you and your Dad with this. If it flys as good as it looks, it should be a good one. RC Ken posted some information on this plane and he was very positive about it and how it performed. Don't be afraid to PM me if you wish. Again, good luck!! |
RE: Goldberg Protege assembly
wonder if this will still be available after great planes takes over.

RE: Goldberg Protege assembly
That's a good question. Time will tell, I guess. Meanwhile, I was pretty happy I picked one up last week cuz I fear that there will be a run on them.

RE: Goldberg Protege assembly
Dad has been building and flying for quite a few years. I will be learning with his friend and instructor. Going to use the buddy box system. Spent some more time today assembling and learning. A few small problems that ended up taking more time than expected. To our suprise, while pondering how to run the antenna, we found a tube already installed. I was in touch with Ken and he really gives this plane a thumbs up.

RE: Goldberg Protege assembly
Anyways, CG I look forward to hearing more details about your "build up" or the Protege.

RE: Goldberg Protege assembly
I put the servo's in the fuselage tonite before heading to a concert. It took me about a half hour.. :D
Next, probably tomorrow evening, will be the horizontal stabs, vertical stab, and the landing gear. I will also put the RX switch but will wait for the engine to decide where to put the battery. By the way, I am using a Venim 5 cell 6 volt 1200 MAH NiMH battery pack. I was telling MinnFlyer and I believe RCKen that I decided to use the new OS 75 AX. After my experience today our uncut flying field, I made 6 attempts to fly, two were successful, and I spent a lot of time walking down to the end of the runway gathering my plane because it could not get enough speed to take off. That won't happen again. The Protege will get the .75. |

I can tell you that if you put this in this plane you're gonna have an overpowered rocketship!!!! :D:D It's a very strong engine that uses the same bolt pattern as the 61 FX. It's a nice engine though, you'll enjoy it!! Ken |
RE: Goldberg Protege assembly
Okey doke, guys. Will do. ;) :D
|
RE: Goldberg Protege assembly
That thing will hover or anything else you want with a .75. lol
|
RE: Goldberg Protege assembly
Well, it will make it through the darned tall (uncut) grass, that's for sure. ;)

RE: Goldberg Protege assembly
As you can see, Moondogie, I have the Tiger 60. I started out with an OS 61 SF. By the way, that was my second plane. I had that engine on there for several months, but it clearly needed a front bearing. So, I took it off one day and put a Super Tigre 75 on. That seemed to wake it up a bit, and I was ready for the 'upgrade'. But the muffler guts broke internally and it made noises like a bell ringing while flying. Because the plane was red, guys at the club would say 'Here comes Santa's plane'.
I called their 'hot line' and told them about it. They immediately sent me a new muffler. So, I swapped that out and flew it. Well, about 5 or so flights later, here comes Santa again. So, I again called Super Tigre distributor and complained. Their solution was not to send me a new muffler, but to suggest that I call MACS and get a tuned pipe for the thing. Well, that REALLY woke up that Tiger 60. It had pretty good flight characteristics already, but that tuned pipe... well, verticals for a relatively new pilot, were awsome!!! So, I think that moving up to the 75 AX on the Protege is probably going to be a bit of the same thing, perhaps a bit more. I do own three of the 1.20 AX's and love them, so this will just add to my collection. I will add my flying experience here when I maiden that jewel, probably over the long weekend. CGr. |
RE: Goldberg Protege assembly
As an update for those that care:
I picked up the new OS .75 AX this afternoon. It fits right in place like it was supposed to be there. We joked at the LHS about it being able to hover.. ha.. probably will!! But, it will surely get off the ground in high grass.. I also put the proper servo arms on the aileron servo's. I had some heavy duty ones that were quite long as temporary ones just to hold the hardware in place. I put some JR servo arms (using the Spektrum servo's). I then got out the dremmel tool and ground a little of the left cheek to provide some clearance for the needle valve stem. So, after I did that, I wanted to seal the wood where I ground out that bit of cheek, so I mixed a batch of resin and coated the entire engine compartment as well as the spot I ground for the clearance. Then I useed the left over resin to go around the edges of the covering where it meets wood, as in the wing saddle area and on the bare wood at the tail. It is now curing. |
