2 stroke vs 4 stroke fuel
i was told you can run 2 stroke fuel in a 4 stroke engine? does it work well?
|
RE: 2 stroke vs 4 stroke fuel
There is really no such thing as two or four stroke engine fuel. Some engines, such as the Saito 4S engines require a high nitro content, where the others do not. An OS Surpass, for instance, will run just fine on 15% nitro with 20% oil blend. Just check the manual before you buy the engine to see what their fuel requirements are then buy accordingly.

RE: 2 stroke vs 4 stroke fuel
What CGRetired said. You can run the same fuel in your 2-stroke and 4-stroke engines. I run Cool Power 15% in all of my engines, everything from a OS .25 2-stroke all they way up to a Saito 180 4-stroke. Works great.

RE: 2 stroke vs 4 stroke fuel
If you are talking about the cool power 4 stroke fuel its the same thing as the 2 stroke airplane mix and the 15 percent heli mix. The only thing different is the labels.

RE: 2 stroke vs 4 stroke fuel
What has been said here I will agree with 100%
BUT! I just had another situation that caught me off guard.[&o] My son bought me a gallon of fuel - 30% cool power Helicopter grade.[X(] OK - what the heli grade ment - I had no idea. So I bought 2 gallons of FAI, NO NITRO and mixed up two 7.5% gallons and a 15% - the 15% for my 4 strokes and the 7.5% for my 2 strokes ...should work ...RIGHT? Wrong! [:@] Both blends caused all engines to seize up, after lots of tuning and head scratching we added extra Caster oil - 2 oz / gal - things were better but the engines still over heated...[:o] So I added more Caster Oil - total count is now 4 oz / gal and now things are working! :D Today's lesson; Watch out for specialty fuels like Heli and Car fuel - they are made for a different purpose and you could pay a hefty price for trying to use them in your engine. [:'(] BTW - Caster Oil is your friend! |
RE: 2 stroke vs 4 stroke fuel
Four stroke fuel for my four strokes along with four stroke servos and radio transmitter. If you start your engine with a chicken stick, make sure it's the special four stroke version. Let's not overlook four stroke propellers, two stroke props may "do" but you really want to pay extra for the four stroke version of the prop. Also you will need a four stroke glow driver and fuel pump.:D

RE: 2 stroke vs 4 stroke fuel
Is it me??? Or do I smell sarcasm :D:D:D
I think the first generation OS 4-strokes could be operated on lower oil percentages. Is this correct? |
RE: 2 stroke vs 4 stroke fuel
Sounds like it. Perhaps B.L.E. also has a left handed screwdriver. I'm not quite sure where he is coming from.

RE: 2 stroke vs 4 stroke fuel
ORIGINAL: CGRetired Sounds like it. Perhaps B.L.E. also has a left handed screwdriver. I'm not quite sure where he is coming from. I use Omega 15% in everything I own that has a glow plug. So far so good. |
RE: 2 stroke vs 4 stroke fuel
lYep, Mondoogie. Any good quality fuel, especially something that has been working for years is just fine. The key issue here is the right amount of oil blend that is used by the manufacturer. Some engines will run just fine with no nitro (ask the Europeans) and then some need higher amounts (ask most Saito flyers). But for those of us that are flying planes and ejoying the hobby, good old standard 15% seems to work out just fine.
I started out with S&W 15% and have used it ever since. Not because it was the best, but that's what the LHS had so I used it, and still do. Omega, Cool Power, whatever. Whatever works is... well, what works. As far as the screwdriver is concerned, well, perhaps you can get the one at sraeS (think about it... :D ) |
RE: 2 stroke vs 4 stroke fuel
The only thing different about helicopter fuel is it has more oil, usually 20 to 22 percent. It makes better power and it also smokes more.
It runs fine in most engines that run 15 percent but you have to open the needle and run the engine richer or it overheats. |
RE: 2 stroke vs 4 stroke fuel
Same here. LHS had Coolpower or Omega , I chose Omega because I like the smell and run mainly 4 strokes so the oil mess is not to bad.
Just maiden a P-51 with a new OS .46 ax. Forgot how slimmy the 2 strokes are. May buy a jug of Coolpower for it , just to see if it helps with the clean up. CGR , my wife nolonger allows me in the Sears tool department , but she did`nt say anything about Home Depot. |
RE: 2 stroke vs 4 stroke fuel
;) Well, Mondogie.. I'm single but still have to answer to the cat. :D
I've not tried Helicopter fuel. I won a couple of gallons of Cool Power a few months ago and am running my S&W down so I can try it out. I don't imagine there will be any real difference in the two. I am thinking of heading to the field this mornnig with the trainer. I've not flown for about two months now, between my knee problem and work-related travel, I just couldn't find the time. Maybe a couple hours today will work out. The weather is supposed to be mid 80's, high humidity, but 5 knot winds. I can deal with that. CG. |
RE: 2 stroke vs 4 stroke fuel
ORIGINAL: warhwk Is it me??? Or do I smell sarcasm :D:D:D Step right up to claim your genuine left handed screwdriver and metric Crescent wrench. Seriously, it is my understanding that helicopter fuel contains a large percentage of oil but it is a low viscosity oil and may not be up to the task if diluted to normal glow fuel percentages. Today's four stroke specific fuels contain practically the same oil percentage as two stroke fuels do. Synthetic oils are a lot less likely to cause the exhaust valve to stick open from baked castor oil residue. |
RE: 2 stroke vs 4 stroke fuel
A freind of mine was having troubles with his saito and called them, they told him to run 30% heli fuelin it and has NOT had any trouble yet.
Not trying to get any thing started here, just passing along info that I know about. |
RE: 2 stroke vs 4 stroke fuel
YEEEHAAA!!! I've always wanted a Metric crescent wrench, and oh boy...a left handed screwdriver!!!

RE: 2 stroke vs 4 stroke fuel
Guys,
While were on this subject. I have a brand new in box OS FS-61. It was bought by a pal back in 1985 as far as I can tell, run once to make sure it ran then put away till he passed away. I'm thinking of using it on something, maybe a 45" 3D Funflyer or selling it to an antique dealer and buying a two stroke :-) Question: for an early OS FS-61 would I run modern fuel blends, or should I run no nitro or very little nitro, like they would have done back then. I can mix my own fuels. Any recomendations ? Martin |
RE: 2 stroke vs 4 stroke fuel
Hey Guys , You can make all the fun you want but I do have a "metric" crescent wrench. It has won me a couple of cold soda's over the years.
I like Cool Power in all my two and four strokes but I sometimes add a couple ounces of castor. Fred |
RE: 2 stroke vs 4 stroke fuel
It's like telling a new driver that when winter comes he needs to change to winter air in his tires. Unless your specific motor calls for a certain blend of fuel use it. Otherwise just pick up the 2 stroke fuel and go fly.

RE: 2 stroke vs 4 stroke fuel
I fill my tires with premium grade synthetic air, no need for seasonal changes.:D
|
RE: 2 stroke vs 4 stroke fuel
Mr.Sneezy, just run current fuel in it
|
RE: 2 stroke vs 4 stroke fuel
I was sent a PDF of the original factory manual by another owner of an O.S. FS-61 This is the quote from it regarding fuels. " The FS-61 runs on standard commercially available model glowplug engine fuel. Fuels containing castor-oil and/or synthetic lubricants are acceptable, but for best performance and reliability, a fuel containing 5 - 15% nitromethane is recommended. " OK, 15% nitro sounds good, and a blend of synth and castor oils. (sounds like normal 2S fuel mix to me too) It says they use a special O.S. type F glow plug, didn't know that. Martin |
RE: 2 stroke vs 4 stroke fuel
I have one of the new Saito FA .62a four strokes. The instructions which came with the engines says a 15% nitro content AND 20% oil content. They don't recommend castor since it will gum up the valves, etc. Using a pure synthetic oil based fuel I'd also invest in some good after run oil to protect against rusting.
|
RE: 2 stroke vs 4 stroke fuel
mr.sneezy OS 2st and 4st engines run well with the recomended 5-15% nitro fuel with 20% oil
|
RE: 2 stroke vs 4 stroke fuel
B.L.E.
Your a GAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D The fuel is all the same but just stick with the fuel you broke it in with. This will make for a longer engines life. Do as everyone but B.L.E. said and just start each engine with what the manufacturer recommends. I use Byron 10% nitro with 18 % castrol/synthetic blend in my 2-strokes and Wildcat 15% nitro with 18% synthetic in my 4-strokes. JMO, Gibbs |
