Electric conversion
What's a good trainer plane to get and convert to electric?
A buddy of mine is selling his slow flier and wants something a little more "wind resistant". He doesn't have a big budget so we're thinking about buying a used gas plane and converting it. I've heard of people doing this, but I don't know how easy or difficult it would be. Any suggestions are appreciated. Anybody here done this before?? This place rocks! Thanks |

There is a convertion fourm in electric but convertions aren't hard first you'll need to tack out the speed controler ext. and a gas moter and everything you need to start which includes
a couple of tanks of gas to break it in, a hand crank or electric gas pump, a electric starter(which is the safest and easyest) or a chickenstick, a glow plug, a servo that controls the throtel the proper moter mount if im forgetting anything the guys here will help |

If he doesn't have a big budget, he's better off sticking with nitro. Park flyers are the only "inexpensive" electrics. When you get to the .40+ size planes, the power systems, batteries, and chargers get pretty expensive compared to nitro. Also, purpose built electric plane are often built much lighter than nitro/gas planes of the same size, since they don't have to withstand the vibration of a nitro engine.

Have a look around the online stores like Tower hobbies or Horizon, a good number of new ARFs are being sold now that can be either glow or electric. Look at these to get an idea of motor, ESC and battery sizes you will need for your used plane.
