Spinner questions
 

Searched through the forums and did not find my answer but I tried so sorry if this is a repost.

I am new to the hobby and purchased a Hanger-9 P-51 PTS and love it. I have flown other planes such as the LT-40 and a J3 cub which fly nice but still like the PTS.
I have been soloing for a while now and have had my first incident. a hard nose over and broke the prop which has forced this issue. I have wanted to install a new prop. I purchased a 10 x 6 however I am having troubles with finding a proper spinner and back plate that will fit my plane. All the local hobby stores carry the standard Du-Bro spinner however the back plate is recessed and I need a flat backed plate. With the recessed plates their is no clearance between the cowl and backplate..ie no go. I see that I can move the motor forward in the mounts and extend the throttle arm to match. I might also be able to put a nut behind the recessed backplate to move it forward or just find a flat backed plate that works. What manufacture should I be looking for or what is my best solution. The spinner size is 2 1/2. Thanks for your help in advance.

The engine is an EVO 0.46 and I was also wondering if the 10 x 6 was the best prop to use.

great planes makes spinners with an aluminum backplate that goes behinf the prop and the spinner fits in a groove in the backplate and does not protrude beyond it.

Thank you for your fast response however, It is the back side of the backplate that is in question. The side facing the motor. The great planes back plate is it flat on the back or is it recessed like the du-bro brand? I see these on tower hobbies site but only get a front view no view of the plate itself.

First, I think the 10x6 prop might be a bit small. After I soloed on my Alpha 40, with this same engine, I switched to an APC 11x6 prop, and it really makes the plane faster and a better climber.

As for the spinner, I just used a GP nylon spinner (2 1/4"?) with aluminum backplate, but I did not take off the stock flywheel. I do not know how this relates to your P-51, but it may make a difference depending on whether or not you leave the flywheel in place. I have heard that you should remove the flywheel when you stop using the three blade trainer prop, but I have left it on so far and no problems.

You can indeed move the engine forward a bit, which is very easy to do with the included mount.

This barely affects the C.G.

I use the Great Planes spinners on this plane, which require no changes.


You do not need to remove the flywheel, but you can if you want to.

If you've added tail weight to the plane you can typically remove it after removing the flywheel.

Don't worry about the spinner. Use a "safety" prop nut by Goldberg, Dubro, or Higley. The small side of your electric starter cone insert will drive it nicely, and it won't get scarred up like plastic spinners will. There will be no issue of interference with fuselage parts, the engine mount, or the prop.

With the right electric starter insert, screwed up spinners are a thing of the past.
