EVOLUTION .46 engine mounting?
 

I have a question, I'm not new to flying just glow engines. I have a vq p51 with a EVOLUTION .46 on it I mounted the engine to fit in the cowl at about a 45 degree angle. Is this right? the engine on first flight cut out due too the carb falling off, yeah I learned my lesson about tightening screws on a glow plane! After putting the plane back together I flew one flight ran great. then the thing started to die mid cycle again. does this engine have to be mounted some way in relation to the gas tank? I read the manual and it is pretty much useless for mounting instructions.

I am new to this hobby however, I have the Hangar-9 P-51 PTS and it has an EVO .46 It is a good motor and runs strong however, I have noticed that it likes to eat glow plugs. Also my instructor removed the restricting lock color on the idle to allow more adjustment and this did help for smoother running. As for mounting I have not seen much info on that but mine is mounted about 2 inched ahead and 1 1/2 inch above the fuel tank. Not sure if this matters or not.

I have had nothing but trouble with Evo engines. I had 3 of them, and all 3 have have been nothing but problems. Nothing but headaches. I`ve had more dead sticks with Evo`s than all my other engines combined.
3 rd times a charm for me , no more Evo`s in my fleet.

yeah I think it is mounted fine I have another plane that is mounted the same way but it has an enya .40 on it. Thanks for the input. It dies at full throttle only after it warms up for a while and on the ground it runs great but at long periods in the air it stalls.I have checked the clunk in the tank and the tank itself all hoses too. I tune it on the ground and then it's like it changes in the air. the motor also feels like it has a bit of play in the rod bushings too.

I have an EVOlution 46 NT. Have flown the past few gallons with 0 deadsticks - runs perfectly and always starts on the first bump with a chicken stick. Another club member also has great luck with his. Now, I'm running mine with the LS mixture very rich - so the throttle transitions are not as smooth as I'd like them to be. I want to lean it out by removing the silly limiter collar but I'm hesistant to do it and ruin the great running streak I'm enjoying so far. Another thing I'd want to try is to get a Tower Muffler. I hear you get an easy rpm boost from replacing the stock muffler which has a very restrictive baffle. Right now I'm getting 12500 rpm on a 12x4 using 15% nitro, which isn't too shabby.

I knew what you were talking about but others picked up on your abreviation and began to make deroggatory comments about "EVO" engines which may not have been fair. Just trying to keep the playing ground fair for all.

Furnaceman:

The Evolution .46 will run just fine at almost any angle.

However the FIRST thing you MUST do is remove the blue collars on both of the needles.

Then take out the high speed needle and put a TINY bit of lock tite blue on the threads, no where else.

Push the carb down hard as you tighten the retaining screw, and tighten all of the cap screws as they come loose early on.

Finally assume that your plane is completely UNTUNED and re-tune it, or have someone do it for you.

The engine runs in all attitudes, but it has a slightly tighter tolerance when it is inverted.

If you get deadsticks either retune or look to your fuel system...
