I GIVE UP !!
Well guys I think I have about had it with this hobby. Im new to the hobby I have been practicing with the ALPHA TRAINER then went out and spent a few thousand dollars on all sorts of supplies,Real Flight G3.5 flight simulator, new 9C SUPER FUTABA radio, new plane with a $500 gas engine, $400 on servos and I have had it. From servo centering, reverse this reverse that, mix this mix that, trim this sub trim that IM CONFUSED. Everytime I turn around I have to buy something, I bought a $40 tru spinner for my plane come to find out it doesnt fit and needs some crap done to it so it does fit. So im going to hang my SUNDOWNER up by some fishing line from my ceiling then im going to take my 9C FUTABA radio outside and throw it up as far as I can into the air to see how many pieces it will break into when it hits the concrete. Tried reading the dang manual to the radio and it might as just well be written in Spanish or Russian cause I have no clue what the hell its talking about. I want to thankyou all for your help. Giving up !! Had enough !! Signing off . . . Martin |
RE: I GIVE UP !!
Martin,
Hold on just a second before you do any of that. The frustration that you are experiencing is typical. You have just taken too big a bite of the hobby too soon. You obviously ore not experienced enough in the hobby to expect some of what you have just been handed. This forum is great for asking what does and does not work together. The Spinner normally needs to be cut to fit specific props. The spinner manufacturers will normally cut them for you when you order it (for a nominal fee). The Upscale radio transmitters do require quite a bit of experience to be able to understand what all they will do for you. Lastly, you probably are not advanced enough to try a plane such as you described. Maybe a little more advanced trainer, and a basic computer radio would work better for you. By all means, put the model and the 9C away for a little while, and go with a more reasonable plane and radio system. Or, find someone in your locality who is experienced with this radio, and get them to help you with the setup. Don't break anything out of frustration. The model and the radio won't care, and you won't feel better about it. Bill, AMA 4720 WACO Brotherhood #1 Bulldog Brotherhood #95 |
RE: I GIVE UP !!
Martin,
I am sorry that you are frustrated by this. But I will say that the steps you took in the hobby are kind of like going from the kiddy pool directly to swimming in the ocean. The Sundowner, a gas engine, and the Futaba 9C are fairly advanced pieces of equipment that a modeler should have a good background in the hobby before they use them. Instead of trying to make such a huge leap from your trainer you could move up slowly, pick up a Sig 4-star or a Godlberg Tiger II as your second time. You'll find them a lot easier to setup, and you'll definitely enjoy flying them as you gain more experience in this hobby. Once you get some experiece under your belt you could tackle the Sundowner again. I'm just finishing up a review of the Sundowner for RCU and I can tell you for sure that while it's not overly difficult to setup, it's definitely not for somebody that is on their second plane. Once you've setup a few easier planes I'm pretty sure you'll find that the Sundowner will be a lot easier to setup than it is now. Ken |
RE: I GIVE UP !!
Hey Martin don't give up. With all the knowledge that is contained in this forum, there isn't anything that can't be solved. Do you have a club? Do you have an instructor? It is a great hobby just give it a chance.

RE: I GIVE UP !!
Hey Martin,
You can't give up now. Maybe you just need to "keep it simple stupid" while learning. On your 9c, all you need to use on your trainer is the trim tabs and the sticks. Learn to fly, and enjoy the sport before getting into all the bells and whistles. I too am new, and get frustrated a lot, but cool off and think about the fun I do have. Then I'm right back at it. Well that's my two cents, and I hope you stick with it. My best to you Martin. Ben |
RE: I GIVE UP !!
buying the best equipment without knlowing how to use it is not always the best choice.put what you have on a shelf and move into a simpler 2nd plane that you can gain more experience/knowledge on.and read what is on this site do not limit yourself to just this forum.problems with the radio use the radio forums, engine forum for engine etc.one thing about this hobby it is fun and it can be frustrating.when frustration steps in,time to take a break and walk away for a bit.then come back and calmly attack the problem.

RE: I GIVE UP !!
dont feel bad, i cant even put together the sig kadet ARF!, without feeling like I want to jab the servo wire in my face. I F'ing hate bending that F'ing servo wires and then having them be wrong! mounting the engine, easy. glue the wings and stuff together, easy. mounting the servos, easy. connecting those Fing rods, a BIT CH. sometimes late at night after a long day of messing with those wires, I want to lie in a dark room and smoke some stuff. But anyways, this hobby is 10% flying and 90% building/tuning.

RE: I GIVE UP !!
SOUNDS GOOD TO ME FOOSBALL CAUSE IM FINISHED. You can have the whole lot the radio, plane, servos, engine and all the supplies that I have bought and I will even throw in the Alpha Trainer kit as a freebe. Everything is brand new except for the Alpha Trainer kit but like I said you can have it. I have a SUNDOWNER FORMULA ONE with an EVOLUTION 35GT gas engine, the plane has high torgue digital servos by futaba. The Futaba radio that I have is a PCM 9C SUPER FUTABA RADIO you can have that as well. The engine has never been started because I have no clue so have not gotten that far. But you can have the whole thing for next to nothing cause im finished . . .

RE: I GIVE UP !!
Wow, you are seriously just going to give up like that? Did you ask anyone for help or is it to the point that nobody can change your mind?

RE: I GIVE UP !!
I have to admit through all my frustration right now you sure got me laughing CCAB17. Thanks for that . . .

RE: I GIVE UP !!
Gee maybe you can start your own auction!! Sure hate to see someone miss out on all the fun that is down the road.

RE: I GIVE UP !!
Instead of throwing that Radio into the air and seeing how many pieces it breaks into, just send it to me, then take a cardboard box throw it up into the air, and pretend it was your radio.

RE: I GIVE UP !!
Martin,
I think it is just as well you move on to something else as it takes a lot of dedication and patience to deal with RC. I have observed a lot on newcomers start out at a fast pace and over-do it like you did. All the Bells and Whistles will not overcome experiance and I doubt you enjoy the necessary but mundane parts of RC to be successful. |
RE: I GIVE UP !!
By the way (although ive only been into the hobby for about a couple of months now...), this is NOT a hobby for people seeking instant gratification or pleasure. You must realize that building and learning your equiptment is most of the hobby. Enjoying it is a VERY LITTLE aspect, but VERY worth the effort. Take a day off, don't quit!!!! Sounds to me like you are trying to get it done too fast. take your time, you have your whole life for crying out loud. Relax.

RE: I GIVE UP !!
Yeah Martin listen to Ccab17----- I wrecked my trainer RIGHT after I soloed. Then spent several hours rebuilding and covering then got a few good flights in, and then wrecked it again. Very frustrating. However I couldn't wait to get building (again) so I can get in the air (again).[sm=sad_smile.gif][sm=what_smile.gif][sm=regular_smile.gif]
Not to mention I'm spending the kids entire college fund on this hobby.:D |

RE: I GIVE UP !!
You said you have been practicing with your trainer? Is it still fly-able?
Go out and fly that one. If you enjoy doing that, then stick with the hobby. Look at the Sundowner as a goal. "Someday, I'm going to be flying the wings off it. Just wait 'n see." Many people on this forum will attest to retaining their trainer just so they can go out and have a relaxing, fun, fly. They don't have to be "on the sticks" every moment of flight time, as you would need to be with the Sundowner. So, keep your trainer. Whenever you get frustrated with your other bird(s) or manuals, or radio, or whatever you're trying to learn. Step back, and take your trainer back out and fly it. If you find this too much, then yes, walk away from the hobby. It'll be sad to see you go. But not all hobbies are for everybody. Good Luck, |

RE: I GIVE UP !!
Martin,
Know where you're coming from - been there done that. I think everybody who's been in this hobby hits a point of frustration at one point or another. I've been playing with RC planes for around 35 years and one think I've learned is if you feel the frustration and burnout, just put them up for a while. I'm sure even RCKen, MinnFlyer, Bruce and others have hit this point at one time or another. While you can get a RTF trainer and be flying in under an hour, to stay in this hobby takes some dedication and patients. This is not a hobby of instant gratification after you get past the first trainer. Like in full scale, you don’t learn to fly on a Lear Jet, you start with a single engine recip and work your way up. I agree with others that you may have jumped too far in with the 9C radio. I have a Futaba 7C and while I've used many of the functions, I don't use all of them. Most of my equipment is the old style, and I was just happy with the servo reverse switches (I learned when your servo reversing was to install a reverse direction servo or re-do your control rods, and there was no end point adjustments, etc, all done at the servo and control horn). I did get a bit frustrated while learning to program a few features on my 7C a few times - so I just set it aside for a day or so the got back into it. My advice is to take a step back, hang the Sundowner up and don't think about it for at least a week. Then sit down and re-evaluate where your present skills are, set some goals where you want to be at this point next year, and discuss them with the clan here. Gain some experience with an intermediate trainer, and find somebody who is into gas planes and have them work with you to set up the Sundowner and radio next spring so it will be ready for you to fly towards the end of the flying season next year. RE: I GIVE UP !!
Martin,
You spent WHAT on WHAT??? Jeez, who saw you coming? Not trying to put you down, but why did you buy such high end equipment? A simple 6 channel Hitec or Futaba radio with standard servos would hae run you less than $250. The Alpha trainer is less than $200. I REALLY don't understand why you spent so much on an engine. What engine was it? A good glow engine of that size should have been less than $200. The simulator is a waste of money if money's tight and you have an instructor to help you. Even with all accessosries and spares you need, you shouldn't have had to spend more than $700 - latch key. My advice is to back off and take a deep breath. Personally, I'd sell that radio, you will probably never need it. Use the money to get some lower-end gear. Get with your instructor and keep practicing. Since you already have a simulator, practice on it, too. Stick with it, good thnigs sometimes come hard. Dr.1 |

RE: I GIVE UP !!
Martin,
I'm very new to this hobby myself. I've got a Futaba 6EXAS, and I don't know what all this radio can do. I myself have read the manual on how to use this function that function and whatnot. Doesn't make squidly sense to me. I'm just about to solo soon, and each time I get with my instructor I learn a little more what the radio can do. One thing I can tell is, you can't absorb everything they tell you all at once. But since I'm using a trainer, those high end options are not for me....yet. I've got most of the basics down on what my TX can do, but as for the other bells and whistles, that will come later as you you learn from yourself/experienced folks and time. I'm no expert, just letting you know you are not alone as far lots of folks saying "I got this gadet to give me more........" and you're wondering if I need to get that gadget too. I don't know if you have had an instructor or you've been flying solo for awhile. But I hope you don't give this up. I love it, even though I don't understand all of the lingo most folks mention in these threads. But I'm learning, anxious, but taking one step at a time. Hope this helps. CC |
