Nexstar Select problem.
Hi, I just bought a new Nexstar select with the .46 fxi and i have a problem. It idles awesome but when you give it full or 3/4 throttle it cuts out and dies. I have only ran about one tank through it and it hasn't even left the ground yet. All the settings on the carb are factory. Any help will be appreciated. P.s. Are props on brand new planes supposed to just fall off?? Didn't think so.
Thanks. |
RE: Nexstar Select problem.
You didn't say if it would run full speed at all or just refused to accelerate. Which is it, we'll go from there.

RE: Nexstar Select problem.
Well, it seems that if I idle up slowly it works alright but if I give it faster that is when it cuts out. It seems hesitant to run full out. Not sure why cause it is brand new.

RE: Nexstar Select problem.
lean it out by an 1/8 turn. that should help

RE: Nexstar Select problem.
OK, if it runs OK if you slowly advance to full throttle then your idle mixture is too rich. I know, hard to believe but it's true. The engine is loading up on you at idle. Lean the idle 1/8 turn increments. It's the small screw INSIDE the carb rotating barrel. Either be EXTREMELY careful or preferable for a beginner, stop the engine while adjusting the idle mixture. Too close to the prop for safety.
After a couple of idle adjustments re-tweak the high-speed mixture too. Lean until it peaks and then turn back CCW a few clicks to the rich side for consistant running and to protect the engine. Once the idle is set it will probably never need touching EVER again unless you make a drastic environmental change. OS tends to ship their engines a bit on the rich side as a precaution. |
RE: Nexstar Select problem.
JoDyO,
If that doen't help richen up the low speed needle valve 1/4 turn. This is one of those things that you should get some help with. If you are just learning let your instructor handle it for you. Tuning an engine can and usually does get very frustrating for a beginner. If your not a beginner you should know how to set up an engine. Props come off for numerous reasons. The number one cause is that you didn't tighten it enough. Number two is that the engine hydulocked on you. Take out the glow plug and hold the plane upside down. Then without the plug in use your starter and get any excess fuel out of the cylinder. Then start over. By the way what your talking about is called a transition. Thats when you go from idle to full throttle quickly. It should be smooth without any hesitation. JMHO, Gibbs |
RE: Nexstar Select problem.
"hydulocked" eh?:D I'm voting for reason #1. Newbie afraid of hurting the prop. Crank that puppie down tight. You won't hurt it but it can sure hurt you if it flies off in your face.

RE: Nexstar Select problem.
I had this same problem with my nexstar through the first tank and a half of fuel. If you go with the manual, you'll never get it tuned right...just take off the limiter and follow the advice above.

RE: Nexstar Select problem.
mine seems to be doing the same thing lots of gas coming out of the muffler seems rich so from what im reading there could be 3 different places to adjust

RE: Nexstar Select problem.
your brand new NEXTAR should be run rich the engine is set rich so it doesn't burn up on you and you don't need to go through the "break in procedure",if the engine is bogging then don't let it idle for long,if you keep the revolutions up it shouldn't load up on you.
you should run at least 5 tanks through it either on the ground or preferably in the air. if you don't know what your doing then STOP! and get some help from someone who does. bruce88123 gave you some good advice the engine is rich for a reason the low end is set rich and after a few tanks it should be leaned out just a touch ,read the NEXTAR instructions page 21,and familarize yourself with the OS hand book that came with your plane. there is 2 main adjustments the high and low speed needles. the high is the main adjustment and has the limiter on it,the low speed is the small screw in the barrel in the carb and is sensitive to adjustments, when you adjust the low speed needle you need to retune the high there co dependent to run well. |
RE: Nexstar Select problem.
ALWAYS KILL THE ENGINE TO MAKE LOW SPEED ADJUSTMENTS:eek: this is a no brainer guys seriously.
I would not change anything until a tank or two was through it first. I only turn the low end screw the width of the screwdriver slot then restart the motor. if your gonna make a mistake here do it by going to rich. leaning that out to soon can cause problems. do to tightness and more heat production in a motor that has not been run in, they can be a little to a lot finicky. go VERY slow on low end changes. Both the low end and high speed adjustments change the distance between each other this is why you need to reset the high speed needle often when working on setting the low speed or idle. A well set engine is a joy to fly.:D |
RE: Nexstar Select problem.
BTW - Nexstar's claim to be broken in. They are NOT. They are pre-set in a VERY vague manner that will get the engine running and that is about it. Care must still be taken for about 6-8 tanks in not over leaning the engine. As the engine actually breaks in the tune WILL shift slightly and the idle will improve also. Don't rush this process and you will have a long living engine.

RE: Nexstar Select problem.
Well, after I did some thinking I changed out the glow plug and put in a new one and now it runs great. I don't know why I didn't think of that before. Also, there seems to be a LOT of fuel coming out of the exhaust. Is this normal? I know there should be some, but it seems excessive. It seems to be coming out alot where the exhaust splits in two. Is there some kind of sealant I can stick in there? Thanks for all the great replies!

RE: Nexstar Select problem.
The engine is still rich so extra oil will be expelled out the exaust. this is good for your engine at this time. after a few tanks you can start to richen it up a little at a time. being to rich won't harm it at all but to lean can do damage fast.
The amount of oil on the plane after flying is a measure of how much fun you had ..bugs and grass stuck on there are just bonuses:D |
