Soloed today!

My 11 year old son soloed today!:D He flew a couple flights take off to landing with me on the buddy box and I never let go of the trainer switch. He said, "Dad, I want to solo". With our buddy box system, he was always on my computer radio. So, his solo was the first time he used the non-computer radio. When he picked up the radio he accidently slid the aileron trim all the way to the right. Me, not knowing this, watched him fuel up, start the engine, and take off. So, the Nexstar takes off. He brings it around and casually says "it keeps banking to the right". I look down at the radio and see the trim and bring it back to center. After about 8 minutes he brings it in for a nice three point landing. We then went over how the trim settings work. My mistake, as I obviously should have done this before take off. [X(] We are flying off a dry lake bed so we can take off and land pretty much anywhere. We always "pretend" that there is a runway for practice, and he landed right on it. He flew four more times, with one abborted landing and go around. I think I have created a MONSTER!

Mesa.. pretty impressive he was able to keep calm and keep flying with the aileron trim out wack.. He sounds like a natural! Unfortunately you have now sentenced him to a life long obsession :D Think of
the planes he'll be flying that will be modeled from the full scale ones when he's 50... we can only dream!!

My dad passed when I was a bit older than your son.. be we got started together as well... at 45 i'm still at it... keep up the good work !!

D Extreme,
You sound like you are doing it right. Just take your time, you will know when you are ready.
OzMo,
Thank you. He has been bugging me to go flying again since we got home Sunday night. We are plannig to go again this weekend, and he wants to fly my Pulse XT. I told him as soon as he can fly the Nexstar in a circle inverted (two mistakes high of course) he can fly the Pulse. He is a really good little monster, I mean KID! Now my 9 year old daughter wants to start flying. She and I will start out on the sim, but I am not so sure she will have the patience.
bruce88123,
Thank you. I am real proud of him. He is a good kid. I will probably repeat that a few times, but hey, I'm supposed to brag.:)
KitBuilder,
I think you are right. As much as I hate to say this, but I think playing PS2 really helped him. He at least has "natural thumbs". LOL He wants to start building from kits, as do I. Problem is, he can't decide which one to build first, so of couse he wants them all. I am planning on the .60 Top Flight P-47 for me. Sure would appreciate any advice for a kit for Tanner.
Frank,
Thank you.
Tanner and I have read all the replys. We are amazed at all the different places that you all are from. It is even a little geography lesson for Tanner.

I know this is a long post, but I just wanted to say THANK YOU to everyone who has ever posted information on this web site. Especially RCKen and bruce88123. I have no idea who you guys are, but you will never know how much you two have helped me. I have been reading a lot of threads, and trying to take in the info. I can say that I am self taught, as I never joined a club or had an instructor. But really I am "RCU" taught. I just took good advice from here, and now my son and I are having a blast.

One last thing. Anybody reading this who wants to get started flying RC planes.....GET AN INSTRUCTOR!!!!!

If Tanner is not sure which kit he wants to build yet, you should consider the Sig Four Star. It's a very easy build, and if it looks too easy for him, there are plenty of ideas on here for modifications to spice it up. It is a great flying plane.

mclina,
We had been looking at the Four Star to build. If we get one, I think we will get the 60. How about the Goldberg Tiger 60 tail dragger version? It looks like it has a square fuselage, which might be easier for Tanner, but I don't know.
Thanks,
Pete

RE: Soloed today!

I have heard good things about the Tiger, but haven't flown it myself. It can't be easier to build than the Four Star - the 4* just about builds itself. The Four Star fuselage is a bunch of tabbed pieces of lite ply that are self aligning. I think the 60 size would be a good choice.

RE: Soloed today!

I've had a Tiger 2 40 size in the past. A good flying and easy to build plane.

RE: Soloed today!

Thanks guys for the input. I think Tanner is going to have a good Christmas.
As for me being an instructor, it's a challenge, as I only learned how to fly in April. But so far so good. I have also had a couple family members on the Nexstar with me. It's amazing to me how some people can fly right away (like Tanner) and others take a little more time to learn. But I guess you guys with more experience see that every day.
Again, thanks so much for your help and advice, like that VISA commercial, it's priceless.;)

Just an update. Tanner flew again this weekend. Wind came up to 10-15 mph and he flew just fine. Of course on the lakebed you can turn into the wind for take off and landings, so no side slipping, it's kind of cheating:D Check out this picture. It was about 65-70 degrees. You would think he was in Alaska!

RE: Soloed today!

Some people say the 60 size is the better flying four star. I like mine just fine and it was an enjoyable build. The only mod I can think of ids plastic bolts for the LG. Both SIG and Goldberg have great kits. :D
