Rx Upside-down - bad idea? Mounting small servos?
 

Hi everybody,
did some googling here and on the internet and did no find an answer:

First time I am building a low wing (Modeltech mini magic extra) and easiest position for the receiver would be to stick on velcro upside-down just behind the firewall - easy to connect-disconnect servos etc.

1)I am worried about servos' connection disconnecting from vibration? Anyone here had this problem - is it a bad idea to do that? Any ideas of how to prevent it (servo/battery disconnecting from Rx) if it does happen?

2)How about mounting Rx verically so that servos are connected from the side? Is this a prob?

3)And another beginners question - re:servo mounting:
I have a Hitec 65 micro servo which does not come with usual rubber grommets bigger servo do. Do I simply screw it on straight to my servo tray (fuse side in this case)? Or do I need to do something to cushion it from vibration?

4)I just realised that most of my questions (like questions above) must have been answered in some good RC beginner book already I should read may be? Anyone could recommend a very good one or two?

Mount the RX anyway you want. You should wrap it in some foam to protect it, or at least mount it with some velcro or foam tape to isolate it from vibration. Mount the servos with whatever hardware they come with.

I have the Mini Magic Extra myself, and since I mounted an OS .25FX up front, I had to put the RX and battery pack in the tail to balance it out. The tail of that plane has a hatch for easy access.

Yes, I was going to velcro it. Actually I have foam rubber which came with the Rx - I guess I can then use rubber then velcro then Rx?


Wow 0.25 on Magic Extra it - I guess it probably hovers with it?

I have 0.15 OS LA - do you think it might be underpowered?

This thing screams with a .25 FX, and vertical is absolutely amazing! I've got a .25 LA lying around, and I was actually thinking of swapping that in to save a little weight. I couldn't find a larger fuel tank that would fit, so I just have the stock tank, and I set my timer for 6min flights. I originally intended to build this as an electric, but then I had a .25 FX lying around, and decided to try that.

I would guess it would fly fine with a .15 LA. I think they recommended a Magnum .15 ball bearing engine, which puts out more power than the LA. Mine is very overpowered with the .25 FX, but then a .15 LA has only half the power.

BTW... I used HS-81 servos in mine.

If you wrap the RX in foam, you usually just wedge it into the fuse somewhere, or glue some wood sticks in to hold it in place. I use balsa sticks or popsicle sticks, I just glue them to hold the foam wrapped RX bundle in place. If you use velcro or foam tape, you just stick it to a flat surface inside the fuse. Wrapping in foam isolates it from vibration and protects it in a crash. The foam or velcro tape just helps isolate it from vibration, doesn't help in crash.

I wouldn't worry a lot about the servo connectors, especially if you wrap the rec. BUT I would worry a lot about the crystal falling out. I've seen what happens when a crystal loosens up or comes out and it isn't pretty.

I'd at least suggest that you put some tape over the crystal to insure that it has a good chance of staying in. ENJOY !!! RED

Upside down won't hurt a thing. do wrap in foam and secure. Battery also in foam. I like to use a foam block that fits up against the fuse walls and floor and carve a pocket for the component, no need for velcro or sticks and gives superior protection.
don't forget to harden the servo screw holes with a drop of thin CA:D

I have the Rx upsiade down on rubberised velcro and will try to put some foam on top of the wing opposit Rx (don't have enough room to wrap Rx from both top and bottom - it is Electron 6 with connectors from the top). Will put some foam around the sides too.

Good hint about crystal falling out. I hope rubber pushing up from the wing would stop that.

Electron-6 is a great little RX, that's what I have in mine. It comes with blue plastic/rubber ring or band to go around the crystal, that helps make it fit snugly into the case and keep it from vibrating loose. Putting some tape over the top is a good safety measure as well.
