Is there a tail dragger RTF trainer on the market.

Almost all trainer are tricycle configuration because they are supposedly easier to takeoff and land. I have found that not necessarily true. It is fairly easy to make the conversion however. Move the main gear so the front edge of the gear is in line with the leading edge of the wing and add a tailwheel.

Yes. Hangar 9 has a P-51 that is a trainer.

They CLAIM this is a trainer although I think it's a better second plane. Lots of arguments over that.

With the right instructor, I have had no problems with the H9 P-51 PTS.

First of all I have not flown the plane I am going to offer as a possible for you. My recomendation is based of of reviews and others experiences. While not an RTF the Sig Rascal ARF may be just what your looking for. Perhaps someone here could legitimize my recomendation or give reason why it would not be a good choice. As an instructor though I would not hesitate to teach a prospective R/C pilot on a 40 size Sig Rascal, and I doubt many instructors here would.

is on the list of good trainers. I like the price alot and its payment plan. But it use's discontinued raido and is that issue with getting items for it or it serviced? and how hard would be too make a tail dragger?

I am now flying the Phoenix Models Dolphin 40 Sport Airplane. It's an ARF. It is my 2nd plane and I just love it. Takeoffs and landing have been great so far. In fact I was actually flying/landing the dolphin better than the trainer. It's very stable and able to fly slow and do aerobatics. A great second airplane IMO.

I've flown the plane, learned on it, and taught others on it too.

It's a decent trainer, - BUT - it can catch a newbie by surprise as it does tend to yaw ( and HARD if the prop is changed ) at run-up.

The better the plane is set up, the less this tends to happen...

e.g. making sure that the rear wheel is set to cause the plane to sit as level as possible, adding a little bit of counter-acting rudder trim, etc. or just taking off from grass, which aleviates the right yaw problem to a large degree.

There are a few things that need attention before the first flight though...



I consider the Pulse XT a beginner friendly tail dragger.

It tracks straight when properly adjusted with very little yaw due to the long tail.

As it comes it flies faster than the PTS or a tri-gear trainer, but if you put the PTS prop on it, it slows down greatly, making it about equal to the PTS P-51 in speed in "training" mode.

The light weight and large wings makes this plane lightly loaded, so it is able to land very slowly.

There is available as a RTF or Receiver ready plane, and holds up well over time for aerobatic flight. It is practically ready to go out of the box.

I've seen a newbie set it up properly out of the box, with NO coaching...

I maidened the newbie's plane only to discover it needed no trim.
