Wing Detailing
I know I should put something on the wings to disciminate top or bottom. My covering job (using Ultracote) came out perfect (I used cub yellow). So tonight, I was going to use 5" strips of adhesive back covering in Black and Red to make like the German Flag colors on the wings. Well, when I put the adheisve back covering on (using windex, which works great), near the leading edge (on the top) I could not get it to lay flat without major bubbles. I suspect this is due to the wing braces. So, I took it all off and said "I'm not ruining my good covering job with bubbled strips of covering". So I am frustrated.. So, any ideas? Where can I get some decent decals other than Tower Hobby? Shoudl I just use some 2-3" strips of sticker covering?
I know I am whining here, but if you guys can give me some ideas, I would appreciate it.. |
re
try a smaller design, only put it on the top or bottom, dont try to wrap it all the way around.maybe on the side of the fuselage.call some local hobby shops

I think white on top is the best. The bottom will always appear dark because the sun isn't hitting it. When you bring it around you can see the top off the wing clearly. I always go dark on the bottom and light on top. Hope that helps.

Wing Detailing
This is what I did on a wing similar to a 4* 40's construction. I also had a nice job on the wing, covered in Cub Yellow Ultracote. I bought some "cheap" Towercoat red, and used it for the "RIB WIDTH" strips on the bottom. I did not go around the leading edge, but did go to the TE of the aileron. I used the Windex method. The Towercoke is much thinner than the sticky back stuff. I let it dry 12 to 24 hrs and then used a trim iron to seal ALL the edges. I also sealed the edges with clear Lustercote, sprayed into the cap, then brushed on the seams with a fine brush. The job turned out great, with a minimum of bubbles, and still looks great after a full season of flights.
Make sure your main covering is good and tight before adding the trim. ..... good luck...lownslo.. PS... keep an eye on the edges..... if they start to curl up... you may have to hit them with the trim iron sooner. Just don't get in too far, as you will create steam from the moisture still under the stripe. |

I put ultracoat stripes (pearl yellow) on my red 4*60 and am happy they way they turned out. I did like "lownslo" suggested using a piece from rib to rib. I had also heard (or read) that putting some holes in the under covering helped to let the gas escape when you are heating up the film. I made sure to have plenty and then used the "windex" method. They came out great even on the edges, and ran them right up to the center of the LE where they seemed to hold fine.
