Need a new plane
I purchase a slowstick for my first plane and have been training ever since.
After about a 2 month break here i am. I really want to upgrade to another plane. Then after that i want to get into gas. But i want to make sure im ready so before i need a new plane and im not sure what to get. any opinions or thoughts? let me know |
RE: Need a new plane
I'm not sure exactly what a Slow Stick will train you to fly for sure. If you're very confident in your abilities, you might try the new Parkzone T-28 Trojan. It's a 4-channel sport plane with a brushless power system. It should slow down well enough to land, but should be pretty fast with the throttle wide open.
If you're not wildly confident in your piloting abilities, I'd suggest you move up to a Hobbyzone Super Cub RTF. It's going to fly faster than your Slow Stick, but still be a good trainer aircraft. If you'd rather build another GWS ARF instead of buying an RTF package, the new GWS AT-6 Texan would be a good choice. It would be a nice stable aircraft but faster than your Slow Stick and far more aerobatic. |
RE: Need a new plane
If i were you i would go to your local club and see what they recomend for gas trainers, if you plan on getting into gas why wait. Most people use a gas trainer for thier first plane so you don't really need to be ready. Your instructor will put you on a buddy box. That way even if you screw up he can take over and save your plane.

RE: Need a new plane
Maybe try an Eratix It is a 3D type plane flys very stable, easy to land, will do anything you ask, Expensive though. but very forgiving. I like the easy landings, Smooth. If not maybe a top wing trainer or a Stick of somekind. The Stick line is a good easy on the thumbs type plane also. Or Maybe a Typhoon. They are foam and very easy to repair if you need. They also will fly very slow and kinda float in on landings. Very areobatic also. The Super Cub is alos a good learner plane but I feel you would get bored with it pretty quick as it is just elev. and rudd. I put a set of mini Edge wings and a 480 brushless motor on a super cub yesterday just to see what it will do. (crash probabaly) lol. Just look around. Tower Hobbies has a plane they guarantee you will not crash and it looks pretty cool too. Gas motor and transmitor and all under 300. 00 Hope you find something you will enjoy. Around here the Tyhoon is what most guys go to as a second plane but it is also a very fast plane as well as going slow. It will do just about anything you want. It comes Plug and play, ARF, or RTF I think.

RE: Need a new plane
If you can fly, land and perfor simple aerobatics (loop, hammer head ) with your Slowstick AND NOT CRASH 99 times out of 100,, then get yoursel an AILERON TRAINER with a brushless motor setup. You will need to get used to ailerons, higher flying and landing speeds and ROG (Rise Off Ground ) takeoffs for glow or gas powered planes.
My suggestion would be to talk to an instructor at your club (You did join a club, didn't you ? ) and seriously consider going directly to a 40 or 60 size glow plane. You state you want to wind up with glow power, so instead of spending the money on another electric, spend it on a glow trainer. Even if you can fly an electric well there are things you will need an instructor for when you transition to glow (engine tuning, usually a faster response time with the plane, faster takeoff and landing speeds, etc ). I fly both glow and electric. Unless you want to shell out some big bucks, you will not get an electric to perform the same as a glow plane. I have converted several 40 size glow planes to electric and getting equivelant performance can sometimes be very daunting (not to mention $$$$$ :) |
RE: Need a new plane
You guys say instructors?
Why would i hire someone to fly my plane with me? Isnt that why you buy your own trainer so that you can learn to fly it yourself? And where are all these instructors? I havent joined a club or anything, dont think i have the time, i just do this as a hobby. I am too busy to fly every other day, mostly just whenever i feel like it. Dont want to have to fly its not fun that way. But i guess an instructor wouldnt be so bad for the first gas plane |
RE: Need a new plane
If you want a glow powered aircraft, You cant go wrong with a Sig Kadet Senior. Once you get comfortable with it, then convert it to a tail dragger and experance a new realm. Good luck on your quest!

RE: Need a new plane
Stop by B&B Hobbys on Francis in Spokane. Talk to Perry about finding an instructor, it will provide you with the support you really need. These guys have been there for 40 years and going strong. Recognize that you are just starting out and good help is hard to find.
