If you want lettering and numbers I use a local sign shop.

there is a ton af variations here from cutting your own iron on covering into patterns to self stick computre generated stuff to paint.
lots of guys make a schematic of top view and side and bottom and draw there design then cut paper patterns. you can use the type feature on computers to make paper letter and number patterns then cut em out of covering with an exacto.

Kinda depends on what you want. I know that RCKen makes some custom vinyl graphics.

What I do is scrape the tips on the ground; and recover that with whatever is handy. Then I poke a hole somewhere, cut out a piece in some appealing (at that time) shape out of another color/pattern, and put that on.

This takes MUCH LONGER than all the other ways noted above; but I end up with a truly unique plane that no one else can duplicate.

When I get tired of how it looks, I pull it all off and start over with a white palette (ok a few red or orange stripes for orientation but mostly white).

I also keep pictures of this progression. I hope someday to have a whole series for an exhibit

The picture is my daughter and my VQ Warbirds P-51D. The numbers on the tail are her b-day and the name Lil' Squirt is from her nick name "Squirt".
