Airplane Magazines

Hi all,
I was wondering what magazine most modelers pefer to read. I currently read AMA's Model Aviation. I was considering another subscription to some other magazine, possibly Model Aiplane News.

Any opinions on magazines?

Thanks

I still read MA, for what it's worth. The only other RC magazine that I still read that's worth anything (IMHO) is R/C Reports.

I read RCUniverse, part of Hearst publications and Media News Group. www.hearst.com http://www.hearst.com/news/press_111607a.html

Model Aviation still comes to the house though.

You are posting in the beginners forum, so I will assume you are relatively new to the hobby. Model Airplane News has been around a long time and their strong point is they give a lot of product information. Not much of anything is in much depth, but good photography. Airplane product reviews are typically 3 pages long, including photos, usually give less than one full page of text. Whether its a foamie, a glow aerobatic ARF or built up kit, one size fits all.

Fly RC also gives a lot of good product info, good photography and a lot more depth of presentation of whatever they are presenting.

RC Report has the most/best/usable RC building/flying information of any RC publication. The paper is not glossy, so their good photography is not as pretty. It does have superb writers with knowledge class and style that none can match in the industry, on an ongoing basis, and the editor allows the space to get the job done right. It does not, however offer up a lot of beginner or new flyer stuff, more for the folks who have been in it for a while.

Model Aviation is a good RC magazine that covers a broad variety of interests. It's a good one. I would recommend in addition to MA, subscribe to something like FlyRC, and if you are so inclined down the road, add RC Report to your library.

Enjoy! :)

RE: Airplane Magazines

If you can locate them, the RC Model World, a magazine from the UK is the best of the lot. Review of ARF showing photos of areas that need to be re-enforced and honest comments for the most part. The have a fee plan in each issue. There is lots of how to articles. The bad part is the thing is expensive, something like $8 a magazine and subscriptions aren't much cheaper. I have a subscripton and although it is expensive, it has twice if not more real model information. Kind of like the Mags used to be here in the US.

There is also another UK magazine, Flying Scale Models, that is very good if your interest is really detailed scale models.

Fly RC does look like a good magazine for me.

Jim Dines, yes I am a beginner, only 14, and about 10 flights on my dad's trainer and 2 on mine

I'll take a look into RC Report.

Thanks

RE: Airplane Magazines

I subscribe to Fly RC, Flying Models, Model Airplane News, and Backyard Flyers as well as Model Aviation. All of the magazines have months where they really strike a chord with me and other months where it seems like nothing in them is of interest to me personally.

Carsten's Flying Models is a nice, unique publication that covers a lot of different areas of model aircraft and doesn't focus on "me too" articles covering the same stuff that everybody else covers.

I can't think of any magazine I'm currently getting that I would want to drop, every issue is like a little present in my mailbox once per month (once every two months in the case of Backyard Flyer).

I am surprised to see that RC Modeler (RCM) magazine was not mentioned by anyone. Has that magazine gone down the tube for content? I have not read them for some time but in the past they used to have some really good models and plans. I never cared for the "reprints" of the articles with their plans as the reprints did not include any pictures but the magazine used to be a good one.

I'm a beginner and just got in the hobby so, I haven't looked at to many magazines. But, the ones I have looked at are Model Airplane News and Fly RC. These both are great magazines in my opinion.

I like RC Report, it has great reviews on new products and all the articales are written in a straight forward opinion and they do not tell you what you want to hear.

MinnFlyer does bring up a good point. I often dig through issues of Swank and Perfect 10s for RC content. Even if they don't have a single model airplane article, I still feel it was well worth the effort.

looking at the pictures while i'm mixing/dripping epoxy glue on them....

The AMA is the only one that I mix glue on and look at the pictures.

For you as a youngster, I do recommend FlyRC. Lots of glitter and color. However they do have a lot of stuff, commercials and articles on the latest stuff out. MAN is a close second but not quite as much info. as FlyRC.

RC Report is, as previously alluded to, somewhat boring reading, however for the more advanced modeler it does have the content. I am an OLD more advanced modeler that is interested in most anything that flies so RC Report serves me well, as does Flying Models.

All the magazines are goo-goo over "Reviews", however I, personally, do not pay significant attention to these disguised commercials. OTOH if a "Review" mentions something as less than desirable, you can bet (1) it is REALLY BAD and/or (2) the company producing the product does not advertise in that mag. ;)

RC Report and Flying Models can be found in most local hobby shops. Same for MAN and FlyRC, but these are also available in many newsstands. I suggest you get a copy of each and check 'em out.

Good luck Young Fellow with your pursuit of a great sport.

RE: Airplane Magazines

Best model magazines you can read are the free ones that many of the long time modelers have about their house stored in boxes. Especially if you find someone with magazines that are more than 20-30 years old, before ARF's made everything just more of the same. The rest are just catalogs with challenging articles on how to assemble ARFs.

Now we know what distracts RC flyers the most...She looks like she could could be out of control.

FLEAbay has some old model magazines reasonable from time to time that can be fun. Watch your swap meets for boxes of old mags.
I bought 3 boxes full of 80s rc mags mostly RCM but a few others and they where priceless for a beginner. I still have some but I pitched all the ones with ugly girls on 'em;):)
