Ordered my first kit!
 

Just wanted to drop a line and say thanks to all of the members and their volumes of input. I just ordered my first plane kit, Sig Kadet LT 40. I'm very excited and looking forward to this new adventure.

Get best 6 or 7 channel you can afford. Go for a 2.4 GHz unit if you can.

Many of the sims on ebay are selling a cd that has FMS on it, plus an adapter that lets you hook your transmitter to the computer. The FMS software is actually available free from the web, so you're really buying the adapter.

I went with the "Futaba 6EX 6-Channel 2.4GHz" radio kit. Thanks for the input! Now I have to wait for it all to get here............Guess I can play with my buggy during the waiting time;)

The LT 40 is a fine airplane. Sig makes good stuff. Occasionally here a word or two that the Lt 40 comes out a little tail heavy so take care to keep it light. A nice OS 46 is SUPER on the LTs.

Yeah, I'm gonna go glow. I got the OS 46. Any secrets/issues with the radio?

Heading to the hardware store in the morning, gotta get my work area set-up. Got a great spot to set-up in. At least while I'm waiting, I can get prepared!:D

The glo-perts can probably give you a better advice on the engine...

I made the comment in another thread that some "40 size" trainers are really closer to 60 size. If memory serves, the LT40 is almost the exact size as the GP PT60. Hmmm.. Makes you think doesn't it?

So you may want to rethink your motor choice. Maybe go for a larger motor closer to a 60 size motor. At least then you can putter around on half (or less) throttle. And have a bigger motor for future birds.

In my mind, I want an airplane to do loops "with authority" I've seen videos where the plane will try to loop, get to the top, and all but fall. That's not a circular loop. It's "D" shaped. I want the bird to still have some airspeed when its at the top of the loop, so it flys through the loop, not limp through.

Again the glo-perts can help you better than I can as far as engine selection.

The radio has been wonderful. I bought a bigger receiver battery 1500mAh, I think.. So I wouldn't need to worry about having enough juice during the day of flying. I run 3004 servos, and the plane seems to be happy with that.


Pay close attention to control rods, make sure they are as straight as you can get them. When it comes time for final assembly, make sure the metal rods extend into the outer guide sleeves. But not too far. Only an inch or so. If you have more than that, especially for the rudder control rod, you could induce some binding. I did this, and I got some servo gitters for the rudder. Once I fixed this, I got rid of some binding, and the servo stopped jittering.

Plan on having the servos farther forward than the plans say. You can always cut the guides shorter. Even if you have to do some modifications for the smooth running of the servo/control-rod/nose-gear assembly. Engines, receivers, batteries, and servos have gotten smaller and lighter since those plans were designed. By building to plan, you'll probably turn out tail heavy. Mine did. When in doubt, think "Err towards the nose." It's easier to add an ounce of weight in the tail then it is to add 4 ounces in the nose.

Biggest thing.. READ KEN'S LT40 BUILD THREAD. Pay attention to how he did all the hinge work. And how attached the stabilizer so it was parallel with the wing. When you're reading it, some of the stuff he covers is "later" in the thread.. So when you get stuck, read ahead, go back and review, etc. Every question I had was covered in the thread.. but a couple of them wasn't where I expected them to be.

Finally.. When you're building.. Don't be afraid to ask your questions here... We all want you to succeed building a good plane and enjoy flying it...

RCKens LT-40 build thread is a great tool!!! Follow his every step..........well except for the choice of color of covering he used.;) When I built mine, I used his thread exclusively, along with my manual. Very informative.

Great choice! My son and I built our LT-40 kit about 3 years ago, successfully soloed and still fly it today.
