Help with new runway
Would like some help and or info about the mat that some clubs are using.
Getting a new field soon and would like to fly as soon as posible. |
RE: Help with new runway
The material is called Petromat. Do a google search. As for suppliers and cost, check locally with paving contractors. I think the typical roll is 15ft wide and 300ft long. There was a writeup about it in the November Model Aviation.

RE: Help with new runway
Is the material used woven?? It looks very similar to a woven polypropylene fabric that we use to cover the ground in greenhouse installations. The stuff we use is guaranteed against UV breakdown for 10 years. If I remember correctly it is about $200 per 15'x300' roll.

The petromat is probably much thicker than what you'd use in a greenhouse, but may be similar. According to the information I've seen on it, its a "non-woven" polypropylene fabric. Not sure of the actual thickness, but the one installation I've seen of it, its a pretty durable material.

The AMA mag had a good article about that product and how to lay it down. Also the AMA can be a wonderful resource for clubs doing new fields.

RE: Help with new runway
The Propex we used is a woven fabric. They do make a non-woven but I have not seen it first hand. If you look at the thread there is a link for above I put a picture of the sample. The 15'x300' rolls we bought weighed 330lbs each. I think it is much heavier than the weed blocker used in a green house.
