First, I would like to say hello to all, since this is my first post. I have been away from the sport for about 25yrs untill the other day I was cleaning out the work room and ran into my eagle2 then my cougar then a bunch of unbuilt kits from a P40 to an albatros. Then came the radios AM types to FM types with cristals and engines still in the boxes needless to say i sat down and started to dwell on the past and how relax i was and loads of fun i had during those times. Thats all I needed to get back into it, but how things have changed. Out of 4 stores in the area 1 is all that remains. I have to play catch up now "no more cristals?" lol. The down side i noticed at the store is all the arf kits dwarf the kit building. I have become a dinosaur and did not notice it, o well. Thank you in advance for having this site up and to the help i will recieve and i look forward to asking my silly questions and getting your thoughts on them. First stop, the air field and licence then a new radio and get the eagle2 flying again. I started a build up of a Funaero Albatros dII given to me a few years back by a friend who had purchased it at palm beach polo club scale masters in florida. I will be posting pictures and a build along for it, for those who might be interested. Again great to be aboard from Miami florida.

Welcome back. I think you will enjoy this forum. The people are friendly and informative, and knowledgeable. Some are quite characters.. great sense of humor..

You've come to the right place.

It seems like you have your priorities in order and I, for one, really look forward to the Albatros build.

Yes, ARF's have dominated the hobby in the last few years, but there are still a few of us who enjoy building. You may want to visit the "Scale" or "Scratch Building" forums also. Scroll through the list of forums to see if any blow your skirt up and talk to the guys.

Radios have also made a big leap in technology this year with the advent of 2.4GHz systems where no frequency pins are required. If you are going to get a new radio, a 2.4GHz system is worth looking into, however, they will not be compatable with any of your current receivers. If you have several FM receivers and you wish to continue to use them, by all means go with a standard 72MHz FM systems. They are far from obsolete.

welcome back, I was just like you, out of it for 20 yrs. my kids suggested gettin a plane and that was the spark. I fly better now then before. maturity I guess. yes alot has changed, I didnt have any old equipment to deal with on the radio end of it, I went witht the new 2.4 system. those engines you have should still work. and you allready have a hanger full of kits. what blew me away is the 3d flying, have you seen that yet? man what a thrill to watch! who knew planes could fly like that!

Welcome back. I too had A lay off for over 20 years and was surprised at how the prices of RC gear had come down. I was flying and building U-Controls from about 1956 then free flight in the 60s then back to U-Control in the late 70s. RC was way out of my pocket range until the 90s so it has been A long time getting here.
Kits are almost A thing of the past but there are plenty of places to buy plans so you can still have something different and not A cookie cutter plane.

Welcome back. I also have just restarted after many years off. flew control line until 73 then started with a rcm basic trainer with a .19 and a mrc 4 channel. Total cost about $600.00 and I was only making about $450 a month as a ssg in the army. Moved on to aeromasters etc etc. Kept flying whereever I went until I retired from the military in 87. Am very glad to be back but I have a lot to learn or relearn whatever. Since I have a 21 year old Funster from a kit , I am puting together a Funster arf from Hobby Lobby. Also bought a spectrum 7 ch 2.4 gig radio. I will welcome any help on these radios as they are a lot more complex than my old 7ch Futaba FM wide channel. I used to fly on 75.640 green/white. I echo everyone welcome. I've come to the conclusion that many of us here have gone through a RC hiatus once or twice in their lifetimes - often its unavoidable with work, family, etc. getting in the way.

I too would love to see that Albatros build when you get around to it. This is a great community; I hope you enjoy your times here.

Look at the Savers Club while you're looking through the Tower Hobby website. First off, that website's absolute best value is the information they include on everything they sell. Forget their discounts and such. They're very often the quickest answer you'll get on a bunch of your questions. They have been teaching people about the hobby forever. and.............. they do have the discounts and free shipping and such...... ;)

You live in Miami? Well, Orange Blossom Hobbies may be gone, but I understand there are a couple of others there that are half as good, and half of OBlossom is better than most that are around today. I think there is a big one over near the DoralCC. Bet you've already looked through the phone book.

New radio technology? Yeah the 2.4 stuff is pretty amazing, but don't fix on the beauty of it and miss seeing the cost effectiveness of synthesizer TXs and regularly priced RXs. Both systems work far better for us than the old ways, but one costs a bunch more for RXs than the other. And both work excellently well to reduce frequency conflict. Synth will cost you a bit less on the system, and then cost a lot less for every new RX.

As for your first top being the airfield and license..... what license? The radios nowadays don't require one.

Every winter I lived in Minnesnowta, I dreamed of when I lived in Miami. Now, I don't live in Minnesnowta and in the winter, don't think about either. And don't have the mosquito problem both had. But getting off topic here.... welcome back

Sounds like you got all kinds of R.C goodies Cool ! As far as radios , I wont tell which to buy {2.4 g.} but I well tell you to buy the best you can afford and one that well fly Heli`s , just in case .

As da Rock mentioned , Tower Hobbys is a good resource and joining the Super Savers club will usually pay for it`s self on the first order.
