Wrong Radio Equiptment?
 

I believe I may have picked the wrong radio package (FUTK52) for my build. I'm currently covering my GP Super Sportster 60. I purchased everything from tower hobbies at once without realizing I selected a "glider" radio. I'm wondering if these servos and receiver will be compatible with a larger airplane. After finding I ordered the wrong setup... I planed on using two of the micro servos (s3101) in the wing, and one s3101 for throttle. I would then use two standard size Futaba servos for Elevator/Rudder.

What are my options? What is your opinion?

If that's the radio you chose (the one that is under the link for Radio Package), then I don't see anything wrong with your selection. It seems to have just about everything you would want.

If you have not ordered it yet, consider the 2.4 Gigs from Futaba and Airtronics. The both seem to be a good value for the money and you get the benefit of the 2.4 Gig system.

Upon re-reading your post, it looks like you already bought it. Ok. Fine. It has model memory so you're off to a good start.

Yes that is the radio I chose, I received it last month and didn't think to much of it until now when its almost time to install it. I should have researched a little more before purchasing... I intend to progress deeply into the hobby, and will look into a 2.4 gig system then.

I would agree with CGRetired. if you can afford it and haven't ordered the system yet you may want to consider this. http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXSFY3&P=SM If not you may want to reconsider using those micro-servos in the ailerons on a 60 size Super Sportster. They may be a little weak for that application.

The micro servo will probably be OK for the throttle, as long as there is no binding in the linkage. For a 60 size plane, however, I would not use micro servos for the ailerons. These servos only produce 35 oz of torque at 4.8 volts. I would order a couple more standard servos. They're an inexpensive investment.

Looking at the reciever, I would also not use this receiver. I believe this is a "single conversion" reciever that is prone to interference. The technical notes on Tower say the radio has a "Range of approximately 650 feet (200m)". This is not adequate for a 60 size aircraft. The reciever in that package is designed for park flyers.

Btw get a larger battery a 250 mah pack on a 60 sized ship will last one flight (maybe less?)

I have a goldberg tiger 60 with a super tigre 90 2-stroke on it that weighs 8 lbs. and I bang the sticks around pretty hard using only futaba S3004 standard servos all the way around.

Another older guy in our club has been sport flying for almost a zillion years and all he uses on his 1/4 scale planes are futaba standard servos and mostly super tigre engines.

The super sportster 60 only calls for a 40 to 60 size engine so I would imagine the Futaba S3004 servos will work fine for you. Using a 4.8v receiver battery they put out 44 oz. of torque. Stick a 6v battery in for your receiver and you'll bump it up to 57 oz of torque, more than you'll ever need in that plane.

I aslo had a goldberg falcon lll with 650 flights on it and "never" had a problem with the Futaba S3004 servos in it! NEVER!

Go with this battery below and you'll have a lot of flight time with your SS using the standard servos.

Definately get a larger battery. On my tiger 60 all I use is a 600 mah receiver battery, standard servos and I get 7 flights after giving it an 18 hour charge at 50mA's with the wall wart charger my radio came with. And when I get home I turn the radio and receiver on to discharge them and it still has an hour's worth of juice on it. and thats a fact!

You could give Tower Hobbies a call - you still might be able to return what you got for the more appropriate radio setup. You would just have to pay the difference.

If this was my project, I'd return what I bought and get a full range system with standard size components. Tower will probably exchange it for you with no hassles other than you'll need to make a phone call and talk to them first. You'll have to pay the price difference, plus shipping both ways, but you'll end up with a system that you know is right for your model.

Tower has great service to keep their customers coming back! They fixed a 0S 91 surpass that needed a $175 in replacement parts after a crash for FREE! I sent it in for repair and they said I owe nothing....courtesy of customer service.

I'd sure give them a call thats for sure and maybe they Will replace it.

Wow! Thanks for all of your help everyone! I'll be sure to give Tower a call. I've heard great things about their customer service so I'm hoping they will understand my mistake. After reading the responses about the 2.4gig system, I will pay the difference to get that newer technology. It will be a smart investment.
