RE: TWO separate engine problems

I have to agree with JohnBuckner. Quit turning it over by hand. The stiffness and clicking are normal on a new engine, and your continued turning it over by hand could possibly cause more damage than good. There is no way in the world to break-in the engine by hand which is what you seem to be trying to do. You're not going to be able to get the engine to the proper operating temperature without running it. And you turning it over by hand can possibly cause damage to the metal of the engine due to a lack of proper lubrication. Even though you are putting in a few drops of oil in the cylinder it's not enough to properly protect the engine, and you are only getting oil in the cylinder with nothing to protect the crankshaft, bearings, and connecting rod. You really need to wait until you get some fuel to break this engine in. If you have to wait until spring to get some fuel my best advice to you is to put this engine away until then, before you wind up ruining the engine for good.

Yup, the heating trick is merely to check to see if there is a problem ( which there does not seem to be, ) and if you'll be able to start it this way.

As mentioned DO NOT keep doing this.

Instead you now know what to do the first time you try to start up the engine.

Once you have it running let it run as it comes out of the box, for a while.

It may not run at high rpm's... just get it running and let it sit rich as it comes for a few minutes.

Then start the normal break in process.

After you've run the engine for 30+ minutes you'll find that it gets a lot easier to turn over.
