i bought
i bought a used Goldberg Eagle 2. Ever since i got it, it has been nose heavy and i have to fly it with about 2/3 elevator trim nose up to get it to fly level. Because of that i have got into trouble with it a couple of times. it had 2.25 oz of weight on the nose which i removed and added thrust angle shims to the engine. i would like to know what i can do to fix the problem so i don't have to buy a new airplane. i have been flying since july and have used one gallon of fuel os i have not flown that much.
the covering is starting to rip and pill off so i clued it back down. i would like to know if it would be a good idea to recover it, and if so how do i take the plane apart to remove the covering. how do i remove the covering where i clued it down. |
RE: i bought
An Eagle 2 is a great AC to learn on, and has no bad characteristics.
So I must ask, "What engine did you install?" If you already took out weight, it would seem that you have a bigger engine than the first owner. The Eagle 2 works best with a 40-46 engine and a 10-6 prop. Next, do you have the plans? If so find out where the CG is and check the balance. As required; start moving things around to balance the AC. The first thing to move is the battery pack, slide it forward and back until it balances. If that is not enough - now you can start moving servos. Stripping a plane is possible but a pain ... I try to avoid it. BUT... if you must... get out your heat gun to soften the glue and peel the covering off. Lightly sand any hard to remove spots. Good Luck! |
RE: i bought
If you are judging nose heavy simply by where your trim switch is stop and rethink this.
Where does the plane balance at? You said you need 2/3 trim, where does that put your elevator in relation to level? Flat bottom wing trainers have a tendency to climb with more throttle, how fast are you flying, how much throttle? As for the covering you can remove the old covering a little at a time with a heat gun or iron. |
RE: i bought
Pick up your plane by holding a finger under the wing, on the spar, on each side of the fuselage. This will tell you if it's really nose heavy, or just a trim issue. You will want to play with battery location, etc. to try to balance it before adding any extra weight.
When your covering starts to peel, just iron it back down with a covering iron. They only cost about $10 and are a lot cheaper than recovering the plane. I have a friend who has an Eagle II with an OS40LA and he had to add about 9 ounces to the nose. I know another guy who used an OS46AX and had it balance perfectly. Both had all of the radio gear installed per the plans. Good luck |
RE: i bought
I flew a Eagle II and if I remeber correctly the down/right thrust is built in to the kit. It comes with wood engine mounting system and predesigned with thrust angles. I would not mess with engine thrust unless it has had the factory wood mounts removed and another engine mount installed. It sounds as if you have a balance problem. Balance it at the wing spar and it will be fine. It is a very forgiving aircraft.

RE: i bought
I also have this plane and I have an OS 46LA powering it and I've never had any problems.. check your CG like said above.. And I just got done recovering mine... Use a heat gun to warm the glue to pull the old covering off... and then go and watch the video here on RCU that Minnflyer has made on covering.. It really helped me, this was my first covering job and thanks to Minnflyers video It turned out better then I could of hope for.

Mount the wing. 2. Get someone to help if needed, hold a long straight edge flat under the wing. 3. Make sure it extends over the horizontal stab (I'm assuming it's flat and non lifting) now measure, IF you find the front of the stab is LOWER than the back the plane will climb, if you find the front of the stab is HIGHER then the plane will dive (or require a bunch of up elevator to fly straight). I once had a Telemaster 40 and made certain EVERYTHING , engine, wing, and stab were 0'd, also took out half the recommended dihiedral (SP) made for a fantastic fun flyer, it would run around on the ground at full throttle all day with the tail up until you fed in up elevator. When in the air it went where you pointed it and stayed there until you gave a different command Best of luck, Dan Rickerd |
