OK first plane?
 

OK so i bought a tx ready hobbico skyvista at a swap meet and have never flown before. Do you think I should buy a trainer to fly first, or will this be ok? There should be a picture attached

I would recommend that you wait to fly this one. A good first plane has a high wing, speed brakes, etc. Although, it might make a good 2nd plane. I also would recommend that if you wait to fly that one, get a Hobbico Nexstar ARF. Notice on the picture, the High wing and speed brakes.

That may not be a traditional trainer but with the right instructor I bet you could manage with it and probably be happy with it longer than you would be with a traditional trainer. I would rather instruct you on this plane than a Hanger 9 P-51 PTS.

you'll be fine,it looks to have a generous amount of dihedral so should be pretty stable.

Whatever you choose you should get an instructor at your local flying field. That type of plane would usually be used as a second or third plane. Although it can be used as a first plane. If you get a trainer you will learn faster and have less chance of getting discouraged. If you plan to learn without help then definately get a trainer. That looks almost exactly like my Hobbico Brightstar, maybe its replacement?
The Brighstar was my second plane and although a hotter flyer than my trainer (SIG Kadet Senior) I would think that it is tame enough that you could learn with it WITH an instructor.
If it flys like my Brightstar you will be very happy with it.

No, it's not a Brightstar, even if it looks like one. Hobbico likes to introduce new planes that look a lot like the one before. Take this one and their Twinstar, for example. They're almost identical, except for the dual engines of course. I am going to the club to get an instructor, though.

I was going to say in general I would talk to your club and see what their instructors have to say about it.... then I realized I probably AM one of those instructors! Are you joining the Flying Electons in Menomonee Falls? If so, it's at the discretion of the instructor as to whether they would take you up or not. Most would probably discourage you from using this plane as your trainer.

Yes, I am joining the Flying Electrons, in fact I'm already a member. You said that you are an instructor, what is your opinion of the plane?

Welcome aboard! IMHO I would strongly suggest getting a high wing trainer. Learning to fly can be a frustrating process, and having a slightly harder to fly plane is only going to made the process take longer. I don't know how familiar you are with the training program, but an instructor will take you up on a buddy box and pass control to you, taking control back when you need a break or are getting into trouble. The more slowly and stable the plane flies, the more time you have to react and the quicker you will catch on.

Having said that, it really is up to you. I realize that most people don't have unlimited budgets for a hobby that they don't even know they love yet (and I stress yet :D). I would give it a shot and take you up, you would likely only get short bursts of control and then I'd be taking back over, and you'd have to endure that for longer than you would if you were flying a more forgiving plane. I'd hate to see you walk away from the hobby because of frustration over trying to learn on a sporty plane.

We have taught people to fly on Wm T-34's at this looks better to fly, it depends on your instructor.
