evolution .52 first time started

i finally got my .52 started tonight but i have a few problems it seems !! atleast every third time i start it it ran backwards the plane would go backwards instead of forwards i read on a post here that i should spin the prop backwards one time when it did this and it would correct itself, sometimes it would and sometimes it would still be in reverse! what causes this and what can i do to prevent it? i did the pinch test and it revved up pretty high before it died so i turned it a little richer and it sounded and ran great so i just ran it at about half speed for a while and it sounded pretty good so then i revved it on up slowly it would just die it would start right back (although backwards half the time) and run just fine and rev up higher but then the next time it might die again theres no way i could get it up and feel safe flying like this...... any suggestions ? also it seems to hydro lock quiet often............but it sure sounds mean when it is running like its supposed to!

It is running a little rich. The cold weather is not on your side either.

An electric starter helps in this situation.

FWIW. I've run though some long troubles with my .61NT Evo.

When it runs backward the engines running too rich or the plug is too hot causing the charge to pre-ignite and forces the piston back down on the first stroke..... From there that's all that's needed to keep running that way.

I can run an OS#8 in mine, but it runs a little better with the Hanger 9 "Super Plug" which is (as I'm told) a four stroke plug.

One more thing..... I think that if you do the pinch test and your engine SPEEDS UP, it's running too rich. When you block off the fuel by pinching the line, the engine runs off the fuel ahead of your fingers.... and leans out....and leans out..... and leans until all the fuel is used and it dies.

P.S. there may be more reasons than that why an engine would run backward.

my MDS .40 did that when i started it for running in, thought nothing of it, lean it out a little and try again or use an electric starter, you could try heating the cylinder head with a hair dryer or something to get it warm and aid with your starting

Umm when over primed and hydro locked they WILL run backwards almost EVERY time try primming a bit less... and if does start backwards let it run at high idol for a minute than SLOWLY close the carb untill it kicks back and starts turning the right directing than quickly open the carb up a bit

The pinch test is a momentary pinch of the fuel line that goes directly to the carb. Momentary means exactly that. Quickly pinch the line and let go. It should slightly increase in RPM. if it dies, it's to lean. If it does nothing, it is probably to rich.

My OS 75 starts backwards often. I just quickly close and open the throttle and it usually corrects itself and continues running.
