Trash Fuel
 

Today at the field, while I was throwing out the wrapper from my BK Rodeo Cheeseburger, I came across a 3/4 full gallon of 15% Cool Power. I threw it in my car, thinking that I could always use it to clean parts if it is no good, and I will try it out for engine break-in on the ground.

My question is, what about a jug of fuel would cause you to throw it in the trash?

Sometimes if you leave it in extreme temperature changes it can create condesation which gets water in the fuel. Or it might just have been old and no longer any good. Maybe someone decided they would leave you some free fuel:D

Fuel that is in a sealed container doesn't go bad. But if it was left open it could have gotten moisture in it which will pretty much make it useless for flying. If somebody threw it away it's a pretty good bet that it's gone bad on them.

But it's still good for cleaning engines with, so hang on to it

Or...Let's not forget that it is probaly one of the best firestarters you can get, no paper needed, burns clean...At least that is what I use the old dregs of fuel I have left over for... Don't know if it is good idea or not, but when you forget to bring wood in and all you have is damp and won't start worth a damn, just pour a half a cup or so over the stack in the fireplace and voila...instant warmth....

I had the same thought. I expected to find a mangled plane in the trash next to the fuel.

I expect it is just bad fuel. I'll keep some for soaking my combat engines after I pull them from the cornfield, and I'll use the rest for starting campfires this summer.

i would not trust it as 'fuel' unless you knew what it really was, where it came from, and if it was any good. Parts cleaning or, as was said, campfire starting, is a good use for it. For the cost of a gallon of new, fresh fuel, it just isn't worth gunking up your engine with it by trying to run it.

Fuel that has had extended exposure to sunlight will run very unstable. You can never get the needle set. It will sound rich up to the lean cut off point. It will also quit on you in the air.

I use it to break in engines and clean engines with.

When I lived in the South years ago I would sometimes dribble it on fire ant beds at the flying field to kill the ants. I think the castor oil was more poisonous to them than the alcohol or nitro. We didn't have synthetic oil in those days.

Since Coolpower is 100% synthetic oil, someone probably had a lean run and seized his engine causing him to toss the jug of fuel out and start running omega.

I just make my own a little castor oil, some gasoline, some motor oil, a little gojo, and filter it all thru a klenex. If you use a little to much of one or the other the klenex will split and then your filter is not good. So I started making my own filters out of Marlboros, spilt them on one side and fill with a grassy type substance when done right the grassy substance will kinda burn like a fog. Then you run to the store and buy you some donuts. What were we doing?

It's always possible that someone just forgot it when packing up at the end of the day. Sometimes it pays to use a checklist. Ever know someone who came out to fly and forgot his TX or some other vital accessory and had to go back?
Admit it, it probably happened to all of you at least once if you have been flying for any length of time.

I left my field box at the flying field once. I guess someone started talking to me as I was packing up and I completely overlooked taking it home with me. Fortunately, one of the officers of the club locked it up in the storage shed and I got it back. Lots of our members forget to take their membership cards off of the frequency control board before going home.

I left my tx there already. I was frantic when I got home, luckily one of my buddies saw it and took it with them:D

I would look at the color, smell it and maybe even taste it, just like a cop looking for cocaine.
Compare it to your fuel... if it seems like it might be ok, try a tank of it. You'll know right away if there's anything wrong with it. At about $20.00 a gallon, I would even retune to run free fuel, and a little extra smoke wouldn't hurt my feeling either, not for free ! :D
