Getting Started....Again...
Hello Everyone,
Since this is my first post, I guess the first thing I should do is introduce myself. As my screen name implies, my name is Don Brent. I live in the Phoenix, AZ area and have recently decided to get back into RC flying after about an 8 year absence. When it comes to flying, I'm definitely still a "square one" beginner because I never got very far 8 years ago. I was in the process of training with a friend of mine and only have a few hours of actual flying time. In terms of construction, I would consider myself a bit more advanced (although certainly no expert). I've been involved in all types of modeling from RC to Rockets, to plastics, model railroading and even wooden ships. Back in 95', I was training on a Goldberg Eagle 2 that I built from a kit (with many improvements). I would recommend this plane to anyone as a good starter plane both for ease of construction and for gentle flying characteristics. This was actually the 2nd Eagle kit I had built. I sold the first one for $250 fully built. The 2nd one had an OS46 SF/ABC engine and featured little "extras" such as an external fuel port, beefed up landing gear, interior details, external charging port, etc...) I wish I had kept it but alas, I went back to school and ended up selling it along with one of my radios. I like JR radios and still have a JR X388s that I hope to use again as soon as I get a new battery for it. I bought yet another Eagle 2 kit to build although this time it will be more for nostalgia than training. I decided to try a larger 60 size trainer this time around and picked up a Tiger Trainer 60 ARF and OS61 engine for it. That will be going together over the next few weeks (stay tuned). While I'm working on that, I plan to get one of those little electric park flyers (3 ch. version) to play with and get use to flying agian. When I'm ready to move on to my 60 Trainer, I'll get an instructor and finish my training on that. At that time I hope to pass the little electric on to my 10 yr old daughter to try to get her hooked! Now that's a novel screen name....I wonder why I didn't think of it (maybe because my name isn't Don Brent?) :) Seriously, Welcome Aboard......Phoenix eh? Seen any rattlesnakes lately? My sister-in-law is moving out there later this summer....she hates snakes, so save her one :) Later he said: "...picked up a Tiger Trainer 60 ARF ...." Good choice but keep the fuel residue OFF the right side of the fuselage....over time it will 'remove' the adhesive! Other than that - enjoy!!!!! Jerry |

Have seen any rattlesnakes yet.
Thanks for the tip on the fuel residue. I'm hoping to put an exhaust diverter on it. I know that won't completely eliminate the problem, but it helps. DB |

One other thing to consider.
Talk with your potential instructors before you buy your radio gear! In my clubs, virtually everyone flys Futaba, Hitec and one or two Airtronics, one or two JR's. That's out of about 200 guys. All buddy box equipment is Futaba/Hitec. You'll want equipment compatiple with your instructors'. Dennis- Sorry, just reread your post and saw you already have a JR. Guess you can always buy another cheap one so you'll have two for training. Or find an instructor willing to play "pass the transmitter". ;) |
