Storage for planes
 

Where do you store you're planes. I am in Houston and have a shop but no AC in it. Is that a problem over time. I am just now getting back in to flying after 30 years and have to store the planes some where.

I've never had AC in my garage and the planes hang from the ceiling out there all year 'round. btw, for 30+ years I lived on the edge of the Mojave Desert, so it got pretty toasty in the Summer.

I live in the frozen tundra of North Dakota (we have winter and summer) Spring is flood and fall is freezing rain. I leave mine out in a detached garage with no heat year round and just bring them in for charging every 3 months in the winter unless going flying. Then I bring in and charge up for a day. Have Balsa and Spads. Both are holding nicely.

I'm just west of you in San Antonio. All my planes have been in my garage for 8+ years with no problems especially with our Texas heat. You'll be fine with them in the garage.

I live in the dampness of N.cal and my planes seem fine as well,I do make sure the engines are well lubed if there not going to get used for a while,this is what I do for storage.
I have shelf standards and use pipe insulation for holding wings and fuses over my work surfaces.
I also got a good idea off the forums for hanging planes off the ceiling using a hangar and foam padding the Floatstar is hanging off a electrical conduit it works great as well.

Thanks everybody. I have a bunch of boats, them being fiberglass I never worried about it. So this makes it easy for me to set the planes up in the shop.
Thanks for the pictures. I will add some when I get done with putting up my supports. I will have to move some sailboats around. LOL

I am new to the hobby also, so, for the Texan boys who responded, does it get very sticky and humid over there also? I plan to store my trainer, radio and all my field equipment in the garage (with no AC also) in the hot humid summer’s of South Florida, are there any issues there besides the hurricanes (lol) :>0 ?

Yes we have the very high humidity here too. Kind a like thick enough to cut with a knife. I keep all my electronics and stuff I do not want exposed to that in either aluminum cases (radios,servos,batteries and chargers) plus I have a hobby room in the house. I build wooden scale boats which I can't do out side.

Yes, very humid. Everything still stays in my shop though. I'm lucky to have a 3 car garage and one of the bays is my shop. My tx does stay stored in its foam case.

Thank you Heinz and Cruzomatic, so, you guys store all your batteires and your radio indoors right ? And the plane in the garage with no issues ? I am just worried the momkote coating will wilt off the plane. Will it ?

No, the plane "rx" batteries stay in the planes the whole time and my transmitters are in the garage as well the planes. The covering won't be a problem either. All my r/c plane equipment is in the garage the whole time with no issues. Planes, batteries, etc, etc, etc.

The wing loading may be a little high on that model.

On a serious note, thanks for the info regarding the humid areas not affecting balsa planes. I live in a humid area throughout the winter with a wet warm vehicle in the garage daily, it can get muggy in there.

mine are either under my bed, stacked against the wall (although my collection isnt all that big, and most of them stay at my dads house in the spare bedroom) engines are run dry of fuel before storage, best to leave them with a bit of ARO to stop the bearings ceasing up

as for the battery packs, i leave them on to run down and then cycle them a few times before the flying season begins

This works great!
It's very versatile because you can buy different size bungies, and you can move the rack arms wherever.

I store the wings on the opposite wall with velcro straps that are anchored into the 2x4s.

Right here up the pike in New Caney! One item that one must be aware of is these #&%*$$*! mud-daubbers, dirt-doubbers, or whatever you wish to call them. I have airplanes in the barn and in the garage. These things find a way to build a nest everywhere from in the fuselages to in the mufflers and through retract ports into the wings. HATE 'em! [:'(]

I keep the wasp and hornet spray close but they still over-run the place. Otherwise the planes seem to survive the temperature extremes fairly well. I have ARFs, dope and paper/cloth, and other painted types.

There is no cure for the mud daubers. I have never seen an animal that can manage to get in to closed spaces. LOL
I think I came up with a great way of storing the planes in the shop/garage. I have 16 inch rafters and will build me a system where I can hang them in-between he rafters. I use my shop for woodworking so my walls are full and room is priceless.
