New to hobby

Hello, all. My father-in-law used to fly r/c planes. About 10 years ago he crashed a Citabra with about an 11' wingspan. He got mad and got rid of all of his gear. Well, he got the urge to get back into it recently. He bought a RTF Tower Hobbies trainer to get the feel of it again. It looks like I'm going to be flying too. I like building things so I wanted a kit. I have a Midwest Aerostar 40 on the way. I should have it sometime next week. He did let me take over the controls from him for a minute. All I can say is BUDDY CORD!!! I'm not going the route of swapping controls anymore. Not a good idea at all. He almost had to get another trainer.

Ten years is a long time without flying. I would let him fly his first to make sure he still knows how... before letting him touch yours! :)

I agree... 10 years is a long time. However, I watched him and his son take turns flying today, and it was like riding a bicycle for them. The only excitement came when I was handing the controls. I wouldn't hesitate to let him fly mine.He has a good bit of flying experience. No worries. I'll get mine together, get trained on a buddy cord, and give it a try on my own equipment. If it doesn't work out, I'll try a different hobby.

If you get a couple of successful flights under your belt, cgarcer, you're going to be addicted to a life-long passion. Consider yourself warned! :p

I feel it's likely already too late, he has the influences in his life which will only be enabling him here. Perhaps some day they will make a 12 step program for this hobby, but until then, another one has been lured to the dark side.
