Super Cub vs. Parkzone J-3 BL
 

I am having a hard time picking between these two. This will be my first plane, and I have never flown before. Which one is the best plane for a newbe? Thanks

I'd recommend the Super Cub the wing span is alot bigger and with the steerable tail gear its easy to take off from the ground. I learned how to fly with one and have taught 3 other people now with it. also it holds up very well to abuse (hard...ahh well crash landings) I haven't flown the brushless J-3 but I'v flown the regular one and I prefer the Super Cub. if you do get a Super Cub turn off the ACT and don't use it, it tends to cause crashes. oh also the SC comes with the X-port if you want to drop bombs or do sonic combat, the J-3 doesn't.

Do you use LiPo batts in your SC??? I want to get the T-28 Trojan for my 2nd plane and want to be able to use the same batts. Thanks

no, in the SC I use the 7 cell Ni-MH that comes stock with it. I have ran a 8 cell in it but thats my cruiser plane I'm happy with the 8.4 volt. with good throttle management I've gotten close to 15 minute flights out of the 1000mah stock battery. I did but an extra battery so I don't have to wait the hour between flights. with three batterys you can fly that plane almost non stop all day. the T-28 is an awesome plane once your ready for it you will enjoy it!!! but I still love my SC I fly it everytime I go out, very fun beginner plane!!!

Instead of an "orientation trainer" such as the cub, look at some of the alternatives.

Without ailerons, you'll be quite limited, and what you pick up will not translate well to other planes.

A plane such as [link=http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXNXV2&P=0]THIS CLICK ME![/link] for the same price after discounts, starts you off with a 4 channel TX, and the addition of a single servo buys you full aileron controls at no other cost.

There are also many other alternatives.


Your best bet is to look for a local club, as most will offer free training sessions.

Often you can even use a club trainer, saving you the expense of a starter plane, and permitting you to graduate more quickly up to regular RC planes.

I have never flown or seen the Super Cub but i learned on a J-3 Cub from Parkzone. It is a great little plane (i had the old brushed one) and with the new brushless motor and lipo it would be even more fun. however i live in Rural saskatchewan and the wind is always blowing here. I would go with the Super Cub because of it's size and more power it would handle wind easier.

I started with the PZ j3 bl and its a little fast for a beginner,if i could start over i would have gone with the sc.

I also started with the J-3 Bl, crashed it many times while learning, and then bought a Super Cub. Still have and fly the J-3, but I definitely reccomend starting with the SC. It's bigger, slower, easier to see, easier to land etc. I started an Rc plane ministry at my church and we have 6 super cubs we teach kids to fly with. I also reccomend a rhino 1350 3cell lipo from hobby city ($15). I had to cut away a small part of the rear battery box frame for it to fit. I also made an adapter by cutting a connector off a bad nicad and soldiering to a deans connector, this way I can use stock battery or the lipo. This Lipo weighs about the same as stock nicad and gives SC almost unlimited vertical climb and 20+ min flying if you don't stay full throttle. Motor will get hot if you stay full throttle, and may not last as long, but cost($9) to replace and performance is well worth it!!!
