Ok, i'm in Aus but i'll try to help.

this is by no means a cheap hobby, but then nothing fun ever is, in Aus the cheapest way of getting started will still cost about $300USD, you can do it cheaper BUT most of the equipment is no good for your next plane.

The AMA (Academy of Model Aeronautics) web site http://modelaircraft.org/templates/ama/ should have alist of clubs in your area, go and visit the clubs and have a chat to the people, if there like the clubs here they love a chat.

The clubs generaly have some one that will give you a fly of a trainer type plane and quite often there is second hand equipment for sale from other club members.

as for hobby shops and prices have a look at www.towerhobbies.com

what ever you do do NOT get sucked in to buying a plane that looks good but it waaaaay beyond your flying ability.

if your reasonably handy and like building things have a look at www.spadtothebone.com

good luck and have fun

How long has your friend been flying? If he/she has been at it a few years, he/she can probably answer most of your questions as fast as you can ask them. They will probably even help you get started (any true friend would). If he/she just recently started, they can remember the confusion associated with getting started and can relate their experience and will probably have asked most of the same questions you are wondering about.

There is no better way to get involved in RC than to know someone who is already involved. They can help you learn, and you can both enjoy the hobby together.

opiea,

I am in Commerce Township, Mi.
I have been flying for 3 years and also have a Zagi.
If you need some advice, drop me a note (PM or Email).

My club is at M59 & Teggerdine Road(Actually White Lake Road and Teggerdine Road - it is part of the Metro Park land).

Are you looking to join a club? Mine might be to far for you.

Like I said, drop me a line and I'll help you out.

Bill
