The question is what is a better simulator Real Flight or Hanger 9 FS One FLIGHT SIMULATOR . I am looking to buy one but would like to get some input of folks that have used either.

I've used Real Flight and it's very good. The only sucky part is that you gotta buy their $200 system even if you wanna use your own controller. I prefer to use my DX6i.

The Hanger version you can buy without the controller but it's still $169. I havn't played this sim but from the videos and pics, it looks to be a decent sim.

Go to your local hobby stores and see what they got in store for you and maybe play one.

RealFlight has a larger userbase and more 3rd party support with more planes/updates.

After looking at this more, go with the RealFlight if you are indeed gonna dish out the $. The FS One control looks cheap and requires keyboard use more.
The Interlink seems to be the 8channel and probably gives a better feel.

The question is a "Ford, Chevvy" question. They are both good.

Just remember, there is a BIG DIFFERENCE between a sim and the real thing - a sim WILL NOT teach you how to fly, but IT WILL improve and fine tune the skills you do have already.

I have Real Flight.

I have searched the net over and the only conclusion I can come to is the same as what Campy is saying about Chevy vs Ford. People on both sides of the equation will say one is better than the other. But on the average it is pretty much split down the middle.

Just make sure your computer has all the necessary hardware to run the Sim software. You may want to check out the system requirements specs before you decide on any of them. You may find that your computer isn't powerful enough, or has a good enough video card to run this software. And even some of the good video cards are not compatible with their software.. so check things out before you buy.

When I upgraded my PC recently, I made sure that it had the right capabilities to run the sim software. Strange.. buying a PC to match the software rather than the other way around. Tells ya who is in control here.

RealFlight continues to produce new versions and Flight Packs. They also have free downloadable planes on their website. It's worth considering the retail health of an application for the long term. And nothing demonstrates health better than a steady stream of products.

As for best for learning, they're both excellent. They both can be adjusted to get realworld wind effects, and the individual models can be adjusted for feel. Beyond those primary considerations, it'll come down to availability and price. They're about the same there too.

I don't agree that a sim can't teach you how to fly, esp if you mix it with personal instruction or even simulated instruction. There are things that are different between IRL and Sim like perspective, lining up for landing, not flying in front of sun or w/e. However the general knowledge and more importantly muscle memory of how to fly, react, and even how to perform advanced moves can be tought on a sim. When you transition from Sim to IRL of course there will be adjustments but that doens't meen you have to learn it all over again you just need to adjust.

I didn't even know what a harrier roll was when i first got G4. I saw them on videos and went into G4 flight school and looked through the different lessons till I found it. The lesson broke the move down into basic parts that were easier to perform and then showed you how to put everything together. After lots of practice I am starting to get it down but without the virtual flight instructor I wouldnt even of known where to start.

Im not saying that everyone can train on Sim and just go out and solo and im not saying to skip the instructor stage. What I am saying is if you take the time to learn how to fly on the sim correctly then you will not need to learn nearly as much with your real plane you will be doing more adjusting to IRL flying then learning how to fly. IMO the actual learning of how to fly should be done on a sim first. There is enough random things to learn at the field already without worring about do I need to move the stick to the left or to the right..

I like RF and its been around for evah! I do wish they would work on the ground handling some though [:@]

Are there other recommended sims that are less expensive? I have FMS, but it's hard to get it set up correctly and my version doesn't have any trainers.

I was stuck in this predicament myself when I recieved my G-3 my graphics card wasn't nearly good enough for the software,and I had a fairly new computer at the time, it ended up costing me another 100$ for a decent card.
I have since upgraded to the G-3.5.065 with free down loads from www.knifeedge.com,I like the aircraft that the Greatplanes sim has,also the down loadable planes that people have posted on the website are very good quality in most cases.
I have as many custom planes now, as from the origonal software, the guys who design them are really good,several of the sim planes I happen to have and the sim versions are very true to form and give a pretty darn good platform for practice,at least for me they do.

Real Flight has demos for G3.5 and G4

Unless you have a usb controller or adapter for your tx, it doesn't do you a whole lot of good to try the demo. But it is free, so you might as well download it and open it up. It will give you some idea of what you're getting with G4.

Keep in mind that at least one of the sims offers a series of lessons within it. The lessons teach you different maneuvers. They're quite useful to learn to do things, or just to try to do things you'd never consider trying with your good model airplane.

It was an amazing find for a buddy of mine who recently got G4. He has been basically just a "bore holes in the sky" kind of flyer for a couple of years now. He thought a snap roll was something only the gods of precision flying would be able to do. He saw the "Training" drop down menu and was looking at the list of lessons and saw "snap roll and half snaps" and decided to watch the lesson. When he saw the stick movements on screen, with the airplane in action, and Frank Knoll doing the voice over he was amazed. It's a fairly easy to do bit of stick twiddling. When we were talking about G4 at the field the other day, his story came out about his discovery of the lessons. Seems he didn't know about them when he got G4.

So there is an extra value buried in some of the sims.

If you're vedio card is borderline. Makesure it's set on max or properly set up in you BIOS.
Even if you have a 256...you might only have it set at 128mb:)

You can try running the sims in 16bit colors. It'll cure a lot of sticky situations.
Then you gatta look up what the heck antiasiling is on your vedio card options:D
Especailly if you have Vista.
Notice in Vista if you have it on 32 bit ....you're tool bar on the bottom of the screen has a pretty cool looking deal.
It's a little window with moving pictures/vedio and all:D Kind of like PIP. it'll drive the heck out of your vedio card thou.lol
By running it in 16bit it'll remove that.

It helps if you have a nice screen .lol

Besides, if you had ever played , played with a sim or a 3d animation software..it's backwards , upside down, reversed.
May i need to stopped messing these things...becuase i can make it out becuase they are backwards.

You think it makes me a better flyer becuase i can make out stuff even if it's inverted or backwards without having to think too much about it

Wow more respond then I had expected. I know it will not replace the time spend with a trainer. But it will give me time to get used to the radio and just let Me fly even when I do not have a trainer or the weather is bad.
Thanks again for all the info. I could not say I am any closer as to what I am going to get but I will post it here when I do. I will take a look at E Bay and see what's on sale. LOL I will also go to my hobby shop and play with there systems. I think they have both there set up.

Try out a lesson or two in G4 when you're at your LHS. They've actually got specific ones for taking off and landing. And an entire grouping of lessons for 3D and another set of lessons for the usual maneuvers.

Well it is a Real Flight 3.5 with all expansions and cables and I got for $120. would say not a bad deal at all. So now i am ready to play. LOL

or you can be raw and just go to the pool and get stuff like these.
