Please...Quick Opinions on Engines!
Hello Everyone,
I've just spent the last 45 minutes reading threads on the type of engines I'm interested in getting for my Midwest Aero-Star .40. Here they are: -TT Pro 40 -TT Pro 46 -OSFX 46 The question that I have here is from these types, or others I don't know of, what are the best to use in training? I'm trying to get the most for my money in a training engine, and to also use that same engine in a beginning aerobatic plane. Hence the 2 types of 46's. I've found good prices for all of them pretty much. And if I decide to go with either 46 I realize greatly that throttle management is *KEY*. Besides the aero star, the other planes I plan on getting/building are the Spad Debonair and DPS. Maybe even the Spazzler or U Can Do 3D. I'm going to pick up my radio (Laser 4) today and I have most of the aero star done. I'm just having a hard time deciding which way to go with the engine. I know that this subject has been beat to death, but I could really use the help on this. Then, of course with other areas, but I'm just not there yet.... :D Thanks, MV |

TT Pro 46
Good engine good value. By the time you are ready for another plane you'll probably want a shiny new engine for that shiny new plane I wouldn't use that as an overriding factor in your decision |

I went through this a month ago. Got an OS.46FX. Haven't regretted it. It's a little more money. You get what you pay for.

Been using a TT Pro-46 for a year (including winter flying at least every other weekend in Upstate NY) and it has performed very well. I just did a quick tally and came up with at least 1,200 minutes running over that year. Survived one burial with no problems. Very peppy engine. I just bought a GP Big Stik and that's the engine I am putting in that plane, too. Thrives on 15% Omega.

In R/C equipment, you get what you pay for. More expensive equipment normally runs better, smoother, last longer, etc, etc.
Its worth the extra few bucks to buy the OS, for its reliability, ease of starting, power and service, if needed. TT makes a decent motor, however OS makes great motors. Crashem has a good point, too. There is a good chance that when you get another plane, you will buy another motor, and another radio. It just how this hobby is. AIN'T IT GREAT!!!! |

If the OS won't break the bank, get it. Otherwise the TT 46 will be just fine.

Both are great engines, you will like either one. I would get the .46 and rule out the .40 though. Both OS and TT are good engines. I have a ton of OS and a couple TT and never had problems with either. I think the OS has a bit more power for later if you can swing it.

I hear the "you get what you pay for" refrain over and over when engines are discussed, but I have to wonder. The TT Pro .46 is $77 at Tower, the OS .46 FX $110. That's almost 50% more. I have both engines, have had them for several years, and I find it hard to justify the extra cost of the OS, particularly on a trainer where you might destroy it in a crash. Actually, I like the TT Pro more because the remote needle valve on the OS is a pain for a bunch of reasons, but mostly because it breaks off and costs $9 to replace. (On the other hand, it's easier to get parts for the OS.) Another weak spot on the OS is the muffler screw. As far as starting and running, they seem identical to me.
On the subject of the engine size, I think almost everybody will tell you to go for the .46. If you're looking at a DPS, then for sure go for the .46. (You'll fly at half throttle most of the time, but the extra power is nice for getting off the ground and getting out of trouble.) |

Well, folks, when I got my Magic I decided to buy an OS 46FX to go on it.
This was instead of the Magnum XLS engine, Figured I'd find out if the new OS products were any better than the older ones. The OS 46FX is a clone of my Magnum 46XLS. The OS FX is so far a good engine, but next time I will once again save the $40 difference and stay with the Magnum. Bill. |

Does your LHS support and sell parts for any of the engines of your choice? If so, choose that. It can make a HUGE difference on that perfect weekend when it's finally not raining...you finally get to fly...and your carb barrel set screw or muffler bolt comes loose at 200 ft on your first flight.

IMHO go for the TT46 or consider a GMS47, the 46FX is an excellent engine but so are the others and the $$$ saved can be put towards more gear.

Hey guys how about the OS .46LA? I've got one in my trainer, it's reliable, starts easily, has plenty of power for a trainer and it costs about $65. For a trainer you don't need the expense of a ball bearing engine, the bushed engines will work fine.

LA vs Pro
The .46 LA is O.K. , but if you can get the TT .46 for 10-15 dollars more why not get the extra performance that goes with it. I have had several LA .46s and although they ran O.K. once I sealed the leaks they were not what I expected in a .46.

TT Pro 46.
I have a couple of these and they are great. Easy to start and lots of power. Plus my LHS sells them and they carry parts. Bill |

TT Pro 46
I have come to love TT. They may not have as much power as an OS FX, but they are tough as nails and really easy to break in. |
Thank You!
Thanks everyone for all the great help and advice!
I've already made my decision to go with the TT 46. But if I find a good deal on the used OS I'll look into that one. Yesterday I put in a thread to find one of these engines used in the engine for sale section. Hopefully I run into some luck and get a good find. Thanks again for all the help. Also, I finally picked up my radio yesterday. I must have read each piece of paperwork 3 times! Not to mention played with the servos with the tx turned on. :D Can't wait till my plane is finished..... Thanks, James |

I posted it in reply to the way one of his early questions was worded, i'm humbled that he liked it so much to use it as a tag

Get the TT pro .46. The reliability and handling is the same as the FX and the power difference is not noticable in the air. The price difference is though!

I agree with william the Magnum is an excellent engine. They have just as much power probably more w/ mac pipe Id rather buy a magnum cheap & spend that saved money on a pipe and blow most 46,s away! plus have a high perf engine to boot.

Midwest Aerostar though?? ICK That was my first plane.. My second was the Balsa USA Stick 40. Thought it was much better flyer.. :) Telemaster 40 would be my favorite trainer to date. Well Except my Senior of course.
Best of Luck! |

I bought and assembled an RCM 40 for a relaxing flyer. Engine? Magnum XLS, what else? Bill. |

I ran a OS max fp 35 on my Aerostar, could be why I didn't like it as much as I did.. Telmasters 40 had Super Tigre 40, Senior had the Tigre 75. Currently just finished an Uproar with a tt pro 46.. But that probibly isn't the best of trainers.

My first Magnum 46 was on an Aerostar. It sold me on the engine. Then I rebuilt the Aerostar to a semi-symmetric wing and didn't like the plane half so much afterward. A lot more aerobatic, but I just didn't like it as well as I thought I would. Bill. |

Fairly new to the hobby, but I love Magnums. First plane was RCM trainer with magnum 40 combo, 150 bucks for both, the engine is way, way stronger and better running then an OS 40 LA which my buddy got.
I own a Magnum 46 now, and ran it up on a test bench, once again, seems extremely strong, engine guy at the club was surprised i got two "screamers" in a row from Magnum. Easily as powerful as a Tower hobbies 46 with tuned pipe I would say. Magnum engines accept tuned pipes? Engine would be a demon then, and cheap as all hell. Mill, Magnum lover. |
