Quick .46 Question

Every 2 or 3 three starts I have this problem: The engine will run very slowly, and at the same speed, from idle to 1/4 throttle. If I advance beyond 1/4 throttle, the engine will quit. On the next start, however, it will usually run normally.

Also, on some of my preflights, when I put the plane verticle at WOT, the engine quits. Other times it does not. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you. :D

RE: Quick .46 Question

The first problem sounds like your motor is starting backwords. This will cause similar effects to the ones you stated. The 2nd problem sounds like a tuning or plumbing problem, most likely the high speed needle is too lean. Hope this helps.

Ah, that makes sense. Didn't even think about that. It probably was running backwards.

And thanks, I'll reset my high speed again, as I was going to adjust my low speed, anyway. Thanks!

RE: Quick .46 Question

Without any other info I would agree that it sounds like it's running backwards. The quickest way to tell is to place your hand forward of the prop and see if it's moving air that direction. If it is, then the engine is running backwards. The normal cause for this is an engine that's flooded

RE: Quick .46 Question

Awesome. Thanks. What exactly is occuring in an engine when it is flooded?

RE: Quick .46 Question

Flooding is usually the result of priming the engine too much before starting. This results in too much fuel in the combustion chamber. Is your motor mounted inverted?

If I am not mistaking from your previous posts, you have the Tower .46 correct? I also have one and I find that it likes to start backwards more so than any other motor I have...besides my old Cox engines!

RE: Quick .46 Question

Yes, I have the Tower .46. It is not inverted. And, yes, I was priming it too much. It was cold out and I somehow thought that if I primed it more, then she'd be more likely to start up. Not the case!

RE: Quick .46 Question

when it's cold, you may find the engine will start better with 1 or 2 drops of zippo lighter fluid in the carb. Only 1 or 2 drops, and it'll light off real nice like. Below about 40F, glow fuel has trouble vaporizing enough for that first POP!
