RE: Engine rating and quality
I didn't mention several brands in my previous post. VMax engines from Richmond RC are supposed to be good solid values by most all accounts. I also didn't mention the SK line of engines sold by KangkeUSA, but they're also excellent performers for a budget line of engines.
Nathan King's comments about Thunder Tiger are kind of an inside joke. Nathan and I were trying to get my F-91s started on my Ace Staudacher S-300 last fall and just couldn't get it to fire. It turned out that the spinner backplate had gotten stripped and we were flipping the prop without turning the crankshaft over. Couldn't really blame that on the engine! :p |
RE: Engine rating and quality
I have the OS46AX. It is my first experience with a glow powered engine. I was able to break in my engine in one tank of fuel, and had it in the air for the second tank. It had loads of power and operated without a hitch. Acceleration from idle to full throttle was really smooth, and it idled very smooth as well. It now starts with one simple spin from a chicken stick.
The ease, reliability, and dependability of this engine are remarkable. Guys at the field were having all sorts of engine problems, dead sticks, etc. And, the OS46AX has a newly designed muffler that makes it sound great! While I have no experience with any other engines, I really don't even want to bother. OS (2 stroke) is the way to go, IMO. |
RE: Engine rating and quality
Yeah, it was a joke. Thunder Tiger engines run really well from my observations.

Saito and JohnDeere , both stump pullers .

webra is all i've been buying lately, they are reliable with great carbs, powerful and last a long time. Haven't bothered with OS much but they seem to run reliably with average power and weight.

ORIGINAL: Insanemoondoggie Saito and JohnDeere , both stump pullers . My 1956 Ford 640. 30 Hp and gobs of torque. Just had to take her in for her 50 year service - new brakes and rims. Bummer. There are OS and there are OS. The LA series are snoozers. The AX is great and the FS four stroke is a torqie engine for the $. I'd take a Thunder Tiger Pro-46 over any of the .40 to .46 OS engines. It's got power and longevity at the right price point. |
