OS .46 LA muffler orientation
 

The muffler that came with my engine is oriented such that it is pointing up toward the wing (high mount trainer). It would "appear" that the muffler outlet could be pointed downward. I say appear, because I tried to move it but it wouldn't budge. I removed the nut from the end and tried using two pipe wrenches, but still couldn't break it loose. This was after running a tank of fuel through the engine. I tried to move it prior to that and thought maybe the heat would loosen it up.

Any thoughts? :confused:

It SHOULD loosen.

You need to remove the nut AND undo the bolt, the bolt is threaded in to the back of the muffler as well.

When you reposition the muffler tailcone, do NOT tighten the long bolt too much. Just enough to keep the tailcone from turning on its own. If you go much tighter, the heat from the engine's running will expand the muffler enough to overstress the long bolt after a few flights, and Presto! the rear half of the muffler will fall away into the weeds.

Just tight enough to keep the tailcone from turning is enough. You can tighten the nut to keep the long bolt from vibrating loose.

Well, I tried to remove the screw in the front, but it's in so tight that all I did was damage the head without getting it loose :mad: Maybe they just went overboard with Locktite on this one :confused:

I'll give it another shot tonight.

Not normaly any loctite on it, if youve had the mokey wrench on it i'd sasy that probably has something to do with it.

try cutting a new slot with a hacksaw and use an impact driver, or drill the head of and replace the bolt

Mine was really tight too... after I had stripped the head of the screw on mine, I got a propane torch and heated the tail end of the muffler until the accumulated castor started bubbling and smoking and it came loose quite easily with a pair of vice grips... of course it might have come apart without heating it(just using vice grips) once I didn't care about stripping the screw anymore!

Did the exact same thing for exact the same reason. First I loosened the nut at the end, then I loosened the bolt itself, and the thing could be turned around easy.

Perhaps a few drop of very fine spraycan oil between the seems might do the trick
