Spinning Direction
 

Hey guys, i have a question about the spinning direction of an engine. It seems that either is spinning counter-clockwise, either clockswise, it can fly. Is there any difference? I know that the normal is counter-clockwise but i just asking, anyway

If the engine is spinning clockwise, the prop will be pushing air forward, and trying to make the plane move backward. If my engine starts backwards though, and I give it throttle, it quits - it won't get up enough speed running backwards to do much.

Hmmm... i think i know what is going on. When i push the prop to clockwise, the engine starts but on the other direction. I seen it with car engines too, how bizzar :D But what forcing the engine to turn on the other direction since i spin it in the other direction?

Electric motors can spin in either direction. Most of our fuel engines cannot. The brushless motors can produce equal power either direction. Many fuel engines won't run at all "backwards". Few will run with equal power either direction.

You can start an engine by flipping it backwards. It might start and run that direction, but almost always will run poorly. When you flip backwards and they start and run well, they have usually bounced back from your flip, and are running in the direction they were designed to turn.

They have "backfired" from the wrong direction. You turned in the wrong direction, they backfired, and are now turning in the right direction.

Engines are timed. They fire at a certain time in their rotation. That firing is not at the center of the compression rotation. So it's "off center". And being off center, it helps the rotation in one direction, and resists it in the other.

It looked like it fired up pretty easy. I suggest you wear a leather glove if you are going to start it with your hand, that prop will remove your fingers easily.

And the gloves will protect me? :)Anyway, anything weird about starting the engine? If you see it, i start it clockwise but it turned counter-clockwise anyway ;) That's easy for me because if i go to spin it counter-clockwise, the prop is a little sharp and i can't start it with my hands

Its running the opisite way of your flip because your not actualy pushing it all the way through the compresion cycle your just bumping it off of it and that is causing it to spin back the other way and ends up starting the engine in that direction. Do your fingers a favor and get a chicken stick or something already...

Ok, don't worry dude. I just didn't find anything that moment i was shooting. In my fly area there are PLENTY of little woods everywhere:D I tried once in the past to convince the major of my city to build a special area for airmodelling but i didn't get any answers. Many years ago, we had one but now it's a darn dirty area fill with plants [&o] Anyway, i think i will gather more people this time and see what we are going to do. We must find some guys follow this hobby too so we get numberous ;)

Yes, a leather glove will protect your fingers. It will keep them from getting chopped off if you do not get them out of the way in time. You may still get bruised but that is better than severed. Hand starting is ok as long as you protect your hand.

Don't worry, i'm fast enough putting my hand away before the engine start, but for any case, i will just find a nice piece of wooden stick to start the engine next time. ;)

If you can get an appropriate length of rubber automobile radiator hose, that makes a good chicken stick. A leather glove is not 100% protection, but will save you a certain amount of pain and grief. Well worth the cost.

I'm not saying that i'm faster than those guys who lost a part of their finger or something, i'm telling that i'm more carefull about the prop. I know that the prop is dangerous. Good thing that i have some "hit" experience with my heli. The darn blade rotors actually hit me :D Darn transmitter. The heli stuck in full throttle position and i couldn't stop it.:D

I've watch my instructor start some enignes by just spining the spiner with his fingers

But...... that's too scary for a guitar picker like me.:)

yeah...I'vebeen hit by flying tail rotors before...it's not a good feeling .lol

Tail rotor??? This is nothing compare to MAIN ROTOR (the big ones):D. Anyway, i know that i just want something to spin but i want something nice to put in my tool case, and soon my field box.

I plugged the battery up in my T-rex 600 (54" rotor diameter w/carbon fiber blades installed) and when I went to pick up my transmitter I accidently bumped the throttle, the rotor spun and caught me right in the side of the head. Hurt like heck.

What we are saying is - You don't know HOW dangerous it is. If you did, you wouldn't use your fingers.

Next time you find a good piece of wood, you should put it in your toolbox. That seems a lot easier than looking for a new stick every time.

I hope you can get together a good group of flying buddies and clean up an airfield.

My five stiches on my right index fingers tell the tale. At least use leather construction type gloves, or better yet, a chicken stick. Or better yet, an electric starter.

But, it's obvious that you know what's best for you. I'm sure we will be reading about it once you end up in the hospital emergency room.
