Unsightly Drop of CA
 

Hi guys

I build an ARF and while gluing on the hinges a drop of CA fell on the wing. Wiped it off as soon as I could with a cloth but the are some streaks of dry CA that I can't get off.

Any ideas how to get rid of that?

I got a drop of CA on the right lens of my bifocals one time. Went to the optician thinking I'd order a new lens. The lab guy just smiled and wiped off the CA with acetone. "Happens all the time," he says.

Wont acetone or CA debonder damage, or dull the covering?

Never tried either of those products so I can offer no advice on that.

But usually right when it happens if you use some sort of window cleaner and a paper towel it can SOMETIMES get it all before it clouds up the monocote (dulls it) but don't wipe it or you'll just smear it, I have just tried to be extremely careful when using the CA, I used it once to glue on the canopy top, and well the whole thing fogged up and needless to say instant white coat of paint to the inside of the canopy, I screw the canopy's on now.

Anyway once it hits the covering its pretty much going to be there for the eternity of the plane unless the debonder works. I learned to live with it or just iron on another piece of covering over it, I'll have to look into the debonder stuff in the future, glad I stopped in here.

Well. I am going to try the debonder thing. If it works, good :D if not, oh well :(

So I will update this thread once I have tried it.

If the drop of CA is on covering then the debonder will not affect it. You can use it without any worries. But for other materials the debonder may discolor or damage the material. Some that I know right off the top of my head are some painted surfaces and clear canopies. The debonder can soften the paint and smear it when you try to wipe it up. Debonder can smear and mar clear canopies. The best thing to do is test the debonder on a small unseen spot before trying it on the area where you have the CA drop. Sometime the debonder can make more of a mess than just leaving the CA drop in place.

When I do hinges, I always have a paper tower soaked in denatured alcohol. As soon as a drop falls where I don't want it to, I clean it and most of the time it all comes off.
Some of the times I take too long and it leaves the white streak. I usually try to clean it but even if I leave it alone. After about 5-6 flights, it goes away on its own. especially if it's in contact with oil lol.

I use nail polish to take care of these incidents. In the end its just the acetone. If by any chance you happen to mix your own fuel, nitro is by far the best CA solvent I've ever seen.

Interesting post because I have a pair of decent glasses that I got CA on and have been afraid to try to remove it...

So my question to you is, were they PLASTIC or GLASS lenses?

I believe mine are plastic, so I've been worried about trying acetone on them.

Acetone will most probably ruin plastic lenses. Zippo lighter fluid is another excellent solvent and sometimes it doesn't attack plastic.

Yeah.....debonder is what you want. And it shouldnt affect your finish at all,but as ken said you may want to test it on a scrap piece first.

I've never tried Zippo Fluid on CA. Does it work as well as Acetone does, or better?

If its just fogged you can use WD40 on a rag.

opjose, I've used Zippo Fluid on various plastics that I didn't want to ruin with acetone and it worked just fine. I don't think you have spare glasses with that same type of plastic to test on so I wouldn't advice you to try on them unless you're feeling lucky.;)

I think if you fly the model for a while...all of the oil that get splater on your wing is going to loosen
the CA:)
That's why i don't use CA to glue the tail fins or hinges.lol
The oil gets everywhere:D

If the CA is hard, you can put several folds of cloth over it and soak the cloth with acetone.

Doing so prevents the acetone form drying so quickly.

Leave the cloth on the area for about 4-5 minutes and then apply a bit more acetone, and wipe the area.

Repeat until the hardened CA has been removed.

As already posted, use WD40 to remove the leftover white "haze"...

Well guys.

Could not get debonder at my LHC. Popped over to the hardware store and got some acetone.

Guess what. It worked like a charm !!!!

I was gonna say acetone should work fine. It is not as harsh as you might think. Just don't use it on the adhesive side of the covering, then it will definitely pull the adhesive off. Now if you were to use MEK (Methyl Ethyl Ketone), you might melt the covering. It will pull the brown of of dog doo!:D

Well, the acetone worked. The covering is fine, needless to say very clean too :D Any trace of a finger print is gone he he. Just use it in a well ventelated room [&:]
