what mode do you all fly? what are the advantages/disadvantages of each?

flew mode one while in germany in the 80's. got out of the hobby for 15 yrs and now fly mode 2. either way I'm still a beginer!

there are at least 4 modes probably more now if you count the 3 chanel, and park flier ones.
IMHO there is no diferance between mode1,2,etc etc, once you learn to fly you just get used to what you know, theres a guy at out club that tought himself to fly and he pulls the elevator stick to go down which is backwards to everything i know. if your learning to fly get a set that is the same as your local club so some one can teach you. in Aus mode 1 is by far the most common but at a club about 100kms up the road from me they all fly mode 2 because the instructors fly mode 2 |

In the states, probably 95% fly Mode II, but I'd suggest you find out what's typical for your neck of the woods.

i was going to learn mode 1 but everytime i go to the club i want to learn at nobody is there and im sick of doing the distance everytime approx 40 miles, so im thinking of going to another club which is much closer but fly mode 2.

Being a beginner myself I have just learnt on Mode 2, whilst my Instructor was using Mode 1. Most radios that can connect in a Buddy/Instructor configuration do not have to be the same mode. I am in Australia and I do not know of anyone at my club that flies mode 2 and they all tried to talk me into Mode 1. :D But being a Computer Flight Sim freak I found Mode 2 more comfortable/familiar as the setup is close to a computer setup. So Mode 1/2/3 or 4 just go with what you are familiar with no matter what other ppl around you are using. Happy Flying

I was taught Mode 1. Like it because first, the aileron and elevator inputs (most used) are separate and second, you learn to use rudder early on cause you are using that stick all the time for elevator.
With that said, the club I fly in is all Mode 2 (cepting me). I have tried to convert some flyers, but everyone is set in their ways. Now, I am one of the club instructors, and have been for the last dozen years or so. I have no problems flying a trainer in the Mode 2 configuration. It does reinforce my feeling that Mode 1 is best for me. Anyway, I'd recommend going with what everyone in the club does as you can end up getting more help that way. Take care, |
