To hot to fly
 

I have had this engine (evolution 46) on 3 planes, it's about 1 year old. It purrs like a kitten, I think it's finally broke in. Never had a problem going to full throttle (before the 90 degree heat and humidity) now there is noticeable hesitation from idle to full throttle. I tried adjusting the needles to no avail. Is there such a thing as to hot to fly?

90° is definintely not too hot. Here in Oklahoma that's cool. We regularly fly at temps above 90°, and flying in 100°+ is not uncommon.

It sounds like your low end is set too rich, and that's why it's hesitating. Changes in humidity can change the way the engine performs and require you to reset your low and high end settings.

If the engines sits idling for a bit, it may be loading up and you will notice a stutter/hesitation when transitioning to fast idle, otherwise it should be smooth when advance either slow or fast. Like Ken said, your low end idle screw or air bleed (depending on which you have) may need adjusting just a tad.

I'm that guy that brags about setting my needles and never having to touch them again. Well, that was fine where I lived in Calif. but here in the Vegas area I can't brag like that anymore. I don't touch them often though.
Yesterday it was just over 90 at the field I was at and my YS 1.10 started running fat??? It's been running perfect for several months now. I had to lean it in A click or two.
It's what they call the Monsoon season here right now, yep, A fact, Las Vegas gets Monsoons. It's nice and clear right now but sometime around noon one will blow in and it gets dark and nasty with high winds and rain then blows out again. Yesterday it got hot and humid just that fast and the heavy air changed my setting. Just A little but enough to bog things down.
Two years ago I would have fought with you about weather change and engine tune, not today. Location, location, location!!;)

This is common. The low end is likely too rich. Hotter temperatures mean less air density. If you're pumping the same amount of fuel into a space and mixing less air you're going to enrichen the mixture.

You might check the valve gap as well. Erratic running four strokes will sometimes benefit from this, but be prepared to retune.

I set mine when it was a dry cool day, and it still flew fine when the humidity and 93 degree weather hit.

Ken, what part of Oklahoma you from I am a sooner as well in KC now but from Broken Arrow. I have been flying heli's but I traded one of my heli's for a trainer plane that I am going to try and fly this weekend. Do you have any advice or just go for it. LOL I am curious if the planes are easier or harder than heli's? I have never flown a plane but I am going to try. Let you know how it works out. Thanks Mike

Boomer Sooner! I live in the south OKC/Moore area. Planes are easier than heli's in my opinion, cause you can give more input without overdoing it. Having said that, you need to try and get with an instructor at a local club and have him teach you. Not many people can just jump right in. You prolly will only need a couple training sessions since you have experience with heli's.

Im not Ken, but I can tell you this, harder or easier they are different.

I watched a 17 year old teach his dad to fly fixed wing. His dad was an accomplished heli pilot, but he had a heck of a time keeping that trainer going where he wanted it. I give him credit for tenacity though, he did get it right after a couple minor crashes.

Thanks, I lived in Moore for 10 to 12 years. My baby sister went to school in Moore. I have friends that still live in Moore and I used to fish in Purcell city lake. It was full of big bass. I have'nt been back but once in the last ten years my buddy's 25 year old daughter died last year had to go to console him. Terrible thing. Thanks for input Do you know any of the FULKS AROUND THERE? Cool I was born Sooner Red but the company I worked for sent me to OSU LOL so I have feelings for both. Kinda funny actually but I am still a die hard sooner fan. Thanks that's reassuring lol. Hopefully I can keep it in the air who knows good news is it was cheap. I traded a heli I was going to put on ebay for it and had no out of pocket expense as long as I don't hurt anyone I am fine with repairs. I have fixed more heli's than some of the pros at it. LOL Finally got it down though it was a tough challenge. I thought golf was frustrating until I got into this hobby, sport what ever we want to call it it is rewarding though watching something you built by hand take to the sky and fly like it is suppose to. I always have to lean the "TOP END" during the summer. I never seem to touch the idle mixture.

LOL only when looking at the nose. You know when left is right and right is left. Have a good weekend. Going to be good flying weather here. Upper 80's low 90's light wind good weekend to get the heli out and work on learning to fly the fixed wing. Hope I don't break as much stuff as I did with the heli learning to fly. My buddy says the fixed wing is much easier, landing is the only problem. LOL I have been flying on the sim and I do just fine with fixed wing on there even get a few rolls in but wont be doing that with this plane. One not enough power and 2 not ready yet, save the fast stuff for the heli.

Let me ask you this I did notice looking at the site for this plane that I need to watch the center of gravity. They said 3 3/8 was less aggressive and 3 7/8 was more aggresive. I am assuming I need to keep it light for the first few flights, am I right in that. The plane is a superstar HKII trainer so it should be mellow enough for me. I want to check it out before I jump in and spend a bunch of money on the planes and then don't like it as much as the heli's or worse yet I cant fly the thing. I am excited though ready to give it a try and hope for the best.

For the first flights you should set the CG directly in the middle of that range you were given. You really shouldn't mess with the CG while training. After you've soloed you can start experimenting with different CG settings.

Too hot too fly? Forecast says 102 tomorrow and I'll be at the field. The advice so far is dead on. Get the engine back in tune and you'll be just fine.

I made it thru the 1st flight with no problems. LOL I guess will see from there.
