Edge 540 engine sputtering???
 

Well, here's the problem.

First of all I don't know much about it besides it running on nitro, it's 70". The motor is the largest recommended.

I own a typhoon 3D, but been flying my friends edge for a couple of nights now, (he built it for me to fly, he doesn't fly kinda funny) the problem is that the engine seems to run lean when it's above 1/2 throttle while flying. By lean I mean it sounds like it's starving for fuel. but when it's on the ground and you hold it, it runs fine. Also when it's at 1/2 throttle and I make a dive and accelerate, without touching the throttle, it does the same thing. I think that it has something with the air into the carb, but I'm a newbie with these rc planes so I could be way off.

Any ideas on how to adjust the fuel, or adjust the carb? Or do I need to get more details about the motor and exhaust? If so i'll post back in the A.M.

How is the cowl cut? It is possible that the cowl ventilation is causing airflow issues to the carb. This would not show itself until the airplane is in the air.

Well I have some info. It has a 1.20 engine and a slim-line exhaust. And the Edge is made by Seagull.

As far as the cowl goes, we cut to small holes in it on the very rear bottom of the cowl, this is for the 2 pipes on the exhaust, otherwise is' stock.

how bigs the fuel tank

Where is the fule tank (both how far aft and its high in relevance to the carb)

Are you using an inline fueler

Who makes the engine

For now my shot in the dark is maybe the engine is overheating in a cowl withough suffecient openings. What prop

For now my shot in the dark is maybe the engine is overheating in a cowl without sufficient openings to let hot air out.
Another note: some people have reported that slim line pits (assuming its a pits muffler) dont buil enough pressure in the fuel tank and some ahve blocked one of the 2 exhaust holes.

If an engine is too rich it can also mislead you into thinking its lean. Dont be afraid to play with it alot. I also just ran into a problem with a thunder tiger .91 4-stroke that had my head spinning in circles thinking it was rich,then lean,then rich,then lean........turns out I think it was overheating like the other guys said. I've never had an engine overheat before including this one. And I was trying to tune it on the ground and it wasnt even inside a cowl. These hot days can really cause problems. So,while tuning it....dont run it for long periods of time without letting it cool. But be careful because if it overheats in the air you in for a BIG eye opener! I made the mistake of taking off with that thunder tiger I spoke of once I "thought" I had it tuned close enough. It must have decided to overheat or whatever it was doing just as the wheels left the ground. It still amazing me to this day how I managed to get it around for a landing in one piece........:eek:

...needless to say,I dont know if that engine will ever see air again because I dont know if I'll ever trust it again. I ended up replacing it with a O.S. .91FX the next day.
