which one, advise please
ok i found a sig kadet lt 40 with an os 46 fx in it and it has been sitting for a year because the guy never flew it, he ran about a half gallon of fuel threw it for tuning and i can get it easily for $175 maybe $150 if i work it, a friend of mine also had a plane that ha hasnt flown since he crashed it on landing about a year ago, he doesnt know what the plane is or what the motor is just knows that the motor is way to big for the plane, he was told that by the guy he baought it from, it is a high wing plane that i do know and would asume that it is a 40 size with maybe a 60 in it, he said that it goes so fast that when he is at full throttle he has to have full down elevator to keep it level anythoughts on what size engine that might represent? i can get that one for $100, which one do you think i should get the new kadet with an os for $175 or a plane that is a few years old with unkown engine for only $100, by the way they both have futaba servos thanks

RE: which one, advise please
Chrisp32,
That's an easy one. Spend the extra and get the LT-40 that has never been flown. On the other plane you have too many unknowns. You don't know what plane, what engine, how many flights, or if it has been damaged. The extra money for the LT-40 is worth knowing that you have a plane that never been flown or crashed. And besides, you will be hard pressed to find a better flying trainer than the LT-40. It really is one of the best flying trainers available. Ken |
RE: which one, advise please
would the kadet be a fun plane to jsut fly and try whatever with as i have a pulse xt already and skipped the trainer stage and also would the kadet teach me some more stuff ?

RE: which one, advise please
I always say that there are no boring planes (including trainers), just boring pilots. I have a ton of fun taking my trainer back out and flying it from time to time, and I learned 12 years ago. But in this case you need to ask yourself what you think about getting it. The mere fact that you are considering it shows that you think you will benefit from it. I'm not trying to be harsh by saying this (just trying to help), but many times when somebody learns on a plane other than a trainer (in your case the Pulse) there are a lot of aspects of flying that they miss out on learning. Flying a plane like a trainer makes the pilot learn how to actually fly the plane. And when doing acrobatics with a trainer it makes the pilot better because it's his skill as a pilot doing aerobatics and not anything from the plane. And then when they move to other planes they will find that the aerobatics are easier to do, and they do them better. In fact, many times when I am trying to learn something new I will pull out my trainer and work on it first before attempting it in a more advanced plane. Also, in my opinion too many pilots advance too quickly these days. They get in a big hurry to move to that 2nd or 3rd plane because they think that they are beyond the trainer, or they think that it's not cool to be flying a "clunky" trainer. But when they move on that quickly they wind up cheating themselves because they don't pick up on skills that will help them on more advanced planes.
Ok, I'll get off my soapbox now.!!! :D Honestly, it's up to you if you want to get a trainer. But if you are going to get one I would go with the LT-40. And for $150 for the plane and a 46 engine it's a heck of a bargain. Shoot, you could pull the engine off of it and resell the trainer and wind up making money!!! :D Ken |

RE: which one, advise please
The OS 46 FX isn't made any longer, but you can still get parts for it. They are a FANTASTIC engine. I have 6-7 of them around here. I've used them for a long time now and I love them. You'll do fine with it.

RE: which one, advise please
well it looks like the kadet will get in the air sooner thatn i expected after what i think is my first dump thumb experience with my pulse xt today, i would take some pictures to show but there honestly is nothing to photgragh all that is left is the tail feathers and the wings are somewhat bent up. i have to dig the engine out of the ground as the whole thing was below ground level, it started with an inverted flyby and the engine stalled don't know why , so i rolled the plane over to land but must not have changes stick directions with my right thumb and down she came streight into the ground when i thried to pull up.

"inverted flight plow-in" [:@] that makes me cringe! Be glad you just had a Pulse to loose, one of the guys at the field last weekend had JUST repaired a Hanger 9 P51 PTS model (the "Progressive Trainer System" that runs ~$350-$400). The FIRST day he flew it (and he's a fairly experienced pilot with 7 or 8 planes) he inverted it on a low level pass and then suffered "brain freeze" and left a 40' plowed up section of dirt that looked like you could plant peanuts in! Yep, the good old "down = up" thing bit him SQUARE in the backside and he spent a bucket of cash getting it all back together and operational again!
Don't feel too bad. This apparently happens alot more than most people will admit ;) I'll bet it looked kinda cool though ! |
RE: which one, advise please
actually it looked pretty dam awesome and for some weird reason im not even devestated about it of course i wish it didn't happen but ohh well no i will fly the kadet and i am excited for that and i hope to find a plane that someone purchased adn never used for pretty cheap and have two planes. i looks like all the gear is gunna be ok but i have to find out why that engine quit because that was the second time it happend but obviously the first time didnt end in a disaster just a wheat field lol. any suggestions on things to check for occasional flame outs?
